Prosiměřice: Churches, Wine Cellars and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Prosiměřice
Prosiměřice brings together dated traces of local history, a wine-cellar lane and cycling routes through the wine-growing region. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to the town, these themes can help you choose a destination: church history, memorial sites, winegrowing and a gathering held regularly in October offer different points of interest.
Church history and dated evidence
The first documented mention of Kostel sv. Jiljí dates from 19 September 1226. The church has Romanesque foundations and was remodelled in an early Gothic style in the second half of the 13th century. The written mention and the building history should be distinguished: 1226 marks the first documented mention, not the year the church was built. The Romanesque foundations form the older structural core; the early Gothic remodelling belongs to a later phase.
A stone pillory bearing the carved date 1794 stands at a central intersection in Prosiměřice. It offers a single, clearly dated reference point alongside the church’s multi-phase history. Other evidence can be found in different parts of the town. At the northern edge of town, towards Vítonice, a statue of sv. Jana Nepomuckého stands beneath chestnut trees on a stone, rectangular-block pedestal. A marble cross stands on the road to Kyjovice, by the turn-off to the breeding facility. The Leopold Zwiebs family had it erected in 1921 in memory of their son Gottfried Zwieba, who fell in the First World War. There is also a well-maintained, restored, semicircular chapel from the 19th century on the road to Kyjovice. In the former settlement of Bohunice, a bell tower was also built in the 19th century. Various kinds of local memorials can thus be found here: a statue, a family war memorial, a chapel and a bell tower.
Wine cellars and cycling routes
The wine-cellar lane comprises 17 wine cellars that are more than 120 to 130 years old. The cellars give the winegrowing theme an architectural dimension alongside the individual churches and memorial sites. There is also a cycling route through the wine-growing region: the Znojemská vinařská cyklostezka I passes through Prosiměřice, while Route II leads to Prosiměřice and continues there on Route I. The two southern branches meet in the town; the entire route is about 190 km long. When choosing a route, you can distinguish which one passes through the town and where the two branches join.
A recurring event date
The international gathering of travellers and tourism enthusiasts CESTY is held regularly in Prosiměřice on the last weekend of October. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the dates for the relevant year. Alongside the historic buildings and cycling network, the gathering offers another distinct point of interest with a set time of year.
