Sokolnice: Castle History, River Landscapes and Hotels
Accommodation in Sokolnice
Sokolnice combines historic buildings and memorial sites with a flat river landscape. The town lies in the Dyjsko-svratecký úval on the right bank of the Říčka, also known as Zlatý potok. This offers a range of themes to consider when planning your trip: architectural history, the memory of the Battle of the Three Emperors, or the landscape.
Architectural History and the Memory of 1805
The Baroque Sýpka dates from the first quarter of the 18th century and is an important landmark of the municipality. The building is also associated with the Battle of the Three Emperors: in 1805, it served as a strategic base for the French army. At the Sýpka, architectural history meets a tangible connection to the events of the battle.
Sokolnice Castle was originally built as a Renaissance fortress. Its last major renovations took place in the mid-19th century in the English Gothic style. Its Renaissance origins and Gothic Revival renovation mark different chapters in the castle’s history.
The castle grounds include the Chapel of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (Povýšení svatého Kříže), preserved as the eastern, or Renaissance, wing. The wall paintings by artist Josef Stern remain visible throughout the chapel. Another chapel stands in the village square. It is considered a Marian chapel because a statue of the Virgin Mary stands at the center of its altar; no formal dedication has been established. Before 1948, the chapel hosted services and Corpus Christi processions, as well as an annual pilgrimage Mass.
River Landscapes and Nature Trails
Sokolnická bažantnice is a landscape complex of alluvial and lowland forests, semi-natural meadows and park-like areas. Žabárník lies in the floodplain of the Dunávka, northwest of Sokolnice. This habitat is home to endangered birds, amphibians and reptiles.
The 1805 battle is also covered by a nature trail: Sokolnice is one of the stops on the Battle of the Three Emperors trail. Viewing stations along the route commemorate significant locations on the former battlefield. Another trail in Obora Sokolnice has six stops. Check current signage and access conditions before your visit.
For a cycling trip, Route 5063 is a useful point of reference. It runs through Sokolnice along the Tuřany–Kobylnice–Sokolnice–Újezd u Brna route.
