Discover Vacenovice: Habán pottery and pine landscapes
Accommodation in Vacenovice
In Vacenovice, traces of Habán culture meet a local museum and a landscape shaped by pine forests. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between the different visitor experiences: the Habánský sklep focuses on pottery and history, while trails and natural areas offer a different perspective on the surroundings.
Habánský sklep and local history
In the centre of Vacenovice stands the old Habánský sklep, which probably dates back to the 16th century. The cellar houses an exhibition on Habán pottery. On display are originals and replicas, a model of a Habán house, and discovered Habán kilns. The exhibition may be updated. Visits are possible during the Vacenovice municipal office’s opening hours, by arranging an appointment in person or by phone. Confirm the details locally before your visit.
The Muzeum Vacenovice also conveys local history, but through a different part of a building: the front living area, dating from 1904, is used as a museum and farmhouse room. The former stables, added in 1946, have been converted into a small hall for smaller exhibitions and lectures. Since 2008, the museum has collected, processed, and presented historical and ethnographic information as well as artefacts, which it also rescues and restores. The village thus offers both a historic cellar building and a museum with several functional areas as different ways to explore the past.
Local culture and viticulture
Omladina, an association of young people, is part of contemporary local culture. Its members meet regularly to practise dances and local customs. Omladina performs in traditional costumes at various celebrations. This is a description of a living association tradition and does not depend on a specific celebration date.
The Žlébky wine cellars offer another glimpse into local viticulture. More than 20 cellars are used by local winemakers to process grapes and store wine. A well-kept lawn lies in front of the cellars. Cultural and social events are held there in cooperation with the municipal administration and local winemakers. If you are interested in a specific event, check its date in advance.
Landscape, walks, and views
Vacenovice lies in a flat to gently rolling landscape on wind-blown sands; the surroundings are predominantly covered by pine forests. The Jezero natural monument, in the cadastral area of Vacenovice u Kyjova, protects wet to marshy meadows, a shallow water basin, and a willow-poplar grove. This protected landscape is therefore different from the generally sandy surroundings dominated by pine forests.
From Vacenovice, Salaš Rúdník can be reached via a paved forest road. The route is suitable for a walk or a cycling stop; surface conditions may change. At Rúdník, Habánský dvůr has established a natural area with a barn, stage, and food wagon. During the warmer months, the wagon offers refreshments. This seasonal note is important for planning: the offering is available in the warm season, not as a year-round service.
Another place to visit is Náklo Hill, on the boundary of the municipalities of Vacenovice, Ratíškovice, Milotice, and Dubňany. There are a lily cross and seated statues of the merchant Sámo, Saints Cyril and Methodius, and Prince Rastislav. The hill offers views in every direction. Installations and access conditions may change; check them before visiting if needed.
These places and themes have different focuses: the Habánský sklep and Muzeum Vacenovice are devoted to history and culture, while Jezero and the pine landscape showcase the natural environment. For outdoor activity, the route to Salaš Rúdník is described as suitable for a walk or a cycling stop. The wine cellars, meanwhile, are primarily associated with the work of local winemakers; events take place on the lawn in front of them. You can choose the focus of your stay based on whether you want to explore local history, the landscape, local traditions, or viticulture.
