Veverská Bítýška: Nature, History and Mill Technology
Accommodation in Veverská Bítýška
Veverská Bítýška can be explored through a range of themes: the Slešťůvka landscape, historical features, and Jarošův mlýn each appeal to different interests. If you are planning a stay here, you can focus on nature and culture or select individual attractions. The destinations below range from a nature trail to historical details from the 16th and 17th centuries, as well as a mill designated a cultural monument.
Slešťůvka Landscape and Nature Trail
Slešťůvka, a significant landscape feature (VKP), lies on the southern edge of Veverská Bítýška. The area covers approximately five hectares and contains a variety of biotopes, including a small wetland, grassland, and the remains of an old apple orchard. A chapel with a spring is also part of the area. Protected species included on a Red List have been found at Slešťůvka. The small area and its different biotopes together create a varied landscape. Its designation as a significant landscape feature draws attention to Slešťůvka as a natural area; the chapel and spring are specific elements of this landscape.
The Slešťůvka nature trail is no more than two kilometres long; its main route is a footpath leading to the chapel. This maximum length gives you a compact route to factor into your day’s plans. Unlike the individual historical sites, the focus here is not on one particular object but on the landscape as a whole.
Church and Historical Features
At the parish church of sv. Jakuba, two features from the 17th century are found in different locations: four bells in the tower and a baptismal font inside. Both details date from the same century, but are clearly separated by location. You can therefore find historical references to the church both in its tower and in its interior furnishings.
Another object is Smírčí kámen, a carved reconciliation stone dating from 1559. A visible remnant of the vertical arm of the former cross remains on the side facing the road. The stone is located approximately 150 metres before the edge of Veverská Bítýška, on the right-hand side of the Hvozdec–Bítýška road. Unlike the church’s historical details, which are spread across several parts of the building, the stone brings its historical significance together in a single carved object and the surviving fragment of a cross. The features also differ in age: Smírčí kámen dates from 1559, while the church bells and baptismal font belong to the 17th century.
Jarošův mlýn
Jarošův mlýn has been designated a cultural monument by the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic. During a visit, you can see the entire mill building, the machines used to process the individual products, and the water channel with its sluice gate. Areas that were strictly off-limits to visitors during operation for hygiene and safety reasons are also accessible. The building, machinery, and water channel show different aspects of the mill: its structure, processing technology, and water management. If you are planning a visit to the mill, check the visiting arrangements in advance.
