If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Vadkovice, you can get your bearings by considering specific connections to nature, history and cycling tours. The landscape and bird protection provide the geographical context; archaeological finds and local history add different layers of time.

Landscape and Bird Protection

Vadkovice lies on a rise. To the south, the land gradually climbs towards the Polácké vrchy; to the north and west, it slopes down to the Nechranice Reservoir, built on the Ohře River. These directions describe its location between a ridge and the water.

The Nádrž vodního díla Nechranice bird protection area includes the cadastral area of Vadkovice. It protects populations of bean geese (Anser fabalis) and overwintering waterbirds. This gives the area’s connection to nature a specific link to a protected area and its purpose.

The reservoir also has a seasonal connection of its own: it lies on a migration route used by waterbirds from Northern Europe and is usually completely ice-free in winter. If you are interested in nature when planning your trip, this offers a winter perspective on the reservoir as well as the protected area.

Local History and Archaeological Finds

The first recorded mention of Vadkovice dates from 7 April 1295. Fires were frequent in the village during the 1860s. Construction of the Nechranice waterworks began in January 1961 and brought many changes to Vadkovice. These dates trace different periods in the village’s history, from its medieval mention to the changes of the 20th century.

In 1984, a badly damaged chamber grave of the Bylany culture was discovered in the Vadkovice area. It contained an unusual sword-sheath fitting. This is distinct from a Corded Ware culture burial ground known as Vikletice, which lay in a triangle between Vikletice, Vadkovice and Drahonice.

The Vadkovický jíran koňský is another dated historical landmark associated with the area: it was designated a memorial tree in 1997, when it was 175 years old. This information combines a specific age assessment with the designation at that time.

Cycling and Activities at the Reservoir

The “Vikletice–Vadkovice–Poláky–Vikletice” cycling route is considered a short loop with views of the Nechranice Reservoir. Check the route conditions before setting off. This helps you factor the loop into your day’s plans without assuming a distance or travel time that has not been specified.

Marked cycle routes also lead to the dam from Chomutov, Kadaň and Žatec. When choosing your route, you can distinguish these paths from the named loop: the former lead to the dam from the three towns listed, while the loop is noted for its views of the reservoir.

Around the reservoir, Nechranice offers sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, swimming and fishing. These water-based activities are associated with the reservoir’s surroundings, not the built-up centre of Vadkovice. Together with the cycling route, they offer different options for a stay: a ride with views of the reservoir or activities on the water.
