Chomutov combines historic sights with nature and leisure activities. When planning your stay, you can focus on what interests you most: city history and architecture, wildlife, relaxation, or technology and traditional crafts. Kamencové jezero and the zoo park offer different leisure and nature experiences, while the tower, museums, and historic sites offer other highlights. This makes it easy to plan which places to visit before looking for a hotel.

Historic Sites and Collections

Chomutov’s historic center was declared an urban conservation area in 1992. The Church of St. Catherine is one of Europe’s oldest Early Gothic churches. The Jesuit complex includes the Church of St. Ignatius, the Špejchar City Gallery, an arcaded courtyard, the Chomutov Library, and the Regional Museum. The complex thus brings together sacred architecture and several cultural institutions, offering different points of interest for visitors.

The Town Tower stands almost 54 meters tall. Inside the tower is a permanent exhibition on the city’s historical development. The Regional Museum also has a permanent exhibition: “Views into Prehistory.” If you want to visit one of these exhibitions, check its availability before your trip. For a focus on technology, visit the Railway Depository, where almost one hundred rail vehicles of various gauges and types can be viewed. The collection may change.

The Stará ves open-air museum presents examples of crafts and agriculture typical of the Ore Mountain regions through permanent exhibitions and accompanying events. The events may vary. The open-air museum thus offers a different focus from the churches, exhibitions, and technical collections: traditional work and ways of life take center stage here.

Nature and Leisure

Kamencové jezero was formed around 1809 when an old alum mine was flooded. Today, it has the largest floating pier in the Czech Republic and offers special opportunities for relaxation as well as a wide range of leisure and sports activities. Some facilities may vary by season. The lake’s history and present-day leisure options make it a destination where nature and the history of human use come together.

Chomutov Zoo Park covers 112 hectares. It is home to 160 animal species from Europe, Asia, and North Africa, known collectively as the Palearctic region. As the animal population may change, check detailed species information before your visit. The zoo park also has a 30-hectare enclosure where visitors can take rides among bison, deer, mouflon, and saiga antelopes. If you plan to take part in this activity, check operating arrangements and departure times in advance.

A Destination Along a Historic Route

The Museum of Czechoslovak Fortifications at Na Kočičáku is located about one kilometer above Chomutov. A path just under one kilometer long leads to military fortifications, trenches, and forgotten machine-gun emplacements. This destination adds tangible evidence of military fortifications to the city’s history. Check the opening arrangements before your visit.
