Nová Víska lies in the Ore Mountains (Krušné hory) at an elevation of about 650 meters above sea level. Between the hills, permanent grassland and almost no buildings shape the landscape. The upper and lower parts of the settlement form a single unit; there are currently 15 buildings. Its elevation places Nová Víska broadly within the Ore Mountains, while the hills, grassland, and buildings describe the character of the settlement locally.

Landscape and the Podmilesy protected area

The cadastral area of Nová Víska u Domašína is part of the Podmilesy European Site of Community Importance (CZ0420160). Protected habitats include semi-natural dry grasslands and shrub formations on calcareous soils, with significant orchid populations. The valley is also home to an almost continuous ash-alder floodplain forest. Thus, open areas shaped by limestone and a wet woodland habitat stand side by side as distinct natural features. A view of the Tušimice power plant is also visible from Nová Víska. It provides a different visual accent from the grassland and floodplain forest, adding an industrial feature to the landscape.

The history of the settlement

The first mention of Nová Víska dates from 1526 and is connected with the settlement, probably founded by Cistercians from Grünhain as Nova vila. Neudorfel was its historical German name. Nová Víska also belonged to the Přísečnice estate. The different names reflect distinct historical associations: Nova vila appears in connection with the settlement’s founding, while Neudorfel was its German name.

The settlement officially ceased to exist on January 1, 1979, as a result of depopulation. Only a few houses remain from the once extensive settlement of Nová Víska u Domašína; today there are 15 buildings in Nová Víska. The figures refer to different scales: the few surviving houses represent the remains of the former settlement, while the building count gives an indication of the present-day place. The dates also answer different questions: 1526 marks a first mention in connection with the settlement’s founding, while 1979 marks its official cessation.

Historical traces and viewpoint

The Puschhof estate ceased to exist in 1728; a sheepfold was later located on its site. The former use of the estate site thus adds another trace to the settlement’s history. The reconciliation cross stood beside an old road above the former village of Nová Víska, in the direction of the small settlement of Krčma (Kretscham). Its date is disputed and is cautiously assigned to the second half of the 18th century. An axe is carved into the cross. The “Vyhlídka u kříže a Kepsteinu” viewpoint is located by the reconciliation cross and Kepstein. The wayside shrine from Nová ves also dates from 1901.
