Obrnice: Zlatník Nature Reserve and Sacred Architectural History
Accommodation in Obrnice
The Zlatník Nature Reserve and the architectural and local history offer two different ways to explore Obrnice. Zlatník is a national nature reserve in the cadastral area of České Zlatníky, within the municipality of Obrnice. The church of St. George is also located in České Zlatníky; the historic town center is also an archaeological site. The Chapel of the Holy Trinity stands in the historic center of Obrnice. This gives you several themes to consider when planning your trip: the landscape around Zlatník, sacred architecture and archaeological traces.
Nature and views at Zlatník
Zlatník is a wooded, partly rocky phonolite peak in the Bílina Valley. In addition to forest, it has rocky sections. From its 521 m summit, you can enjoy views of the České středohoří and the ridge of the Krušné hory. The mountain can thus be viewed from two perspectives: its own form is shaped by phonolite, woodland and rocky terrain, while the views take in the named mountain ranges.
There is a take-off area for paragliding on the southern slope, at an elevation of about 465–470 m. If you are interested in this activity, check before your trip whether it is currently possible to use the area. The elevation is given as an approximate range. The mountain’s location in the Bílina Valley and the views from its 521 m summit are also relevant to its landscape appeal.
Churches, a chapel and archaeological traces
The Church of St. George in České Zlatníky is a cultural monument with a Neo-Romanesque façade. It contains parts of the valuable furnishings and frescoes from the demolished Minorite Church of St. Francis Seraphin in Most. The church of St. George thus brings together two perspectives: its Neo-Romanesque exterior and parts of its interior furnishings, including frescoes whose origins trace back to the Minorite church in Most.
The archaeological site in the historic center of České Zlatníky includes a church, a settlement and a burial ground. The history of the town can therefore be explored there through more than sacred architecture alone: the site also includes places of settlement and burial. This archaeological perspective differs from looking at a single building and broadens the picture of the historic town center.
The Chapel of the Holy Trinity in the historic center of Obrnice offers a different architectural point of reference. It dates from the late 19th century and is Neo-Gothic. Pilasters divide its façade, the windows end in pointed arches, and a small bell tower is incorporated into the roof ridge. The two buildings thus offer different points of reference: the Neo-Romanesque façade of the church of St. George and the Neo-Gothic forms of the chapel.
Climbing at Zlatník
Climbing is subject to its own location-specific and practical restrictions. A measure dated 27 February 2023 permits climbing at designated locations on the western slope of the Zlatník Nature Reserve. Before visiting, check the current access conditions and restrictions. Unlike the paragliding take-off area on the southern slope, climbing is therefore limited to designated locations on the western slope.
Whether you are mainly interested in nature, views or architectural history, Obrnice offers different themes that can be considered separately when planning your trip. Zlatník represents a landscape perspective, with its elevation and long-distance views; the church, chapel and archaeological site invite you to focus on the architecture and history of the historic centers.
