Otvice: Church, cycle path and water sports
Accommodation in Otvice
Otvice offers a distinctive mix of architectural history, cycling and water sports. When looking for a hotel, you can first decide what will be the main focus of your trip: are you considering the town primarily for its church and local history, as a stop along the cycle path, or for activities on the water? The town’s features make these distinctions tangible and help you choose Otvice based on the interests you want to shape your stay.
Water Tower, Stream and Ponds
The water tower stands on the western edge of the town and is the municipality’s only listed building. It was designed by Adolf Niklas. The cylindrical structure is approximately 15 metres high: its shape and height give the tower a different architectural profile from the Neo-Gothic Church of St. Barbara. When exploring the town’s history, the western edge of the town is the specific location to look for this structure.
Water also features in descriptions of the town. The Otvický potok, also known as the Hutní, flows through Otvice. It is fed by drainage from the three Otvické rybníky ponds. The three ponds border Kamencové jezero on its eastern shore; the largest is locally known as Banda. This makes it possible to consider the stream, ponds and lake as distinct landscape features. The name Banda also appears in the name of Wake Park na Bandě.
Church of St. Barbara and Local History
The earliest surviving written mention of Otvice dates from 1295. At that time, Bedřich and Dětřich ze Šumburku confirmed the transfer of the village to the Teutonic Order in Chomutov. This early reference provides a historical landmark, while the building history of today’s Church of St. Barbara spans several centuries.
A Baroque church, built in 1655, previously stood on its site. It was demolished in 1897 because of its poor structural condition; construction of the present church began in 1902. St. Barbara is a Neo-Gothic building from the early 20th century. After being closed since the 1950s, the church was blessed and reopened for liturgical use in September 2015.
Cycle Path and Water Sports
The cycle path from Chomutov to Strupčice passes through Otvice. Most of the route was built along the trackbed of a disused railway line. The former railway line is therefore a defining feature of the path. Its intended use is also important for planning: the cycle path is not intended for motor vehicles. Check local conditions before setting out.
Wake Park na Bandě offers a different activity. At a cable water-ski lift with various obstacles, you can water-ski and wakeboard. The park also has a rental service and equipment servicing. These details distinguish water sports from cycling: one trip can focus on an activity on the water, while another can focus on the route through Otvice and its former railway line.
May Procession Entries
The municipal calendar listed May processions throughout the municipality in Otvice on 1 May 2025 and 1 May 2026. These two dated entries add a specific event context to the architectural and landscape features. When choosing a hotel, you can weigh whether Otvice suits your travel interests primarily for its historic buildings, the cycle path, water sports or also its local events.
