Háj: Vápenka, Mountain Meadows and Routes
Accommodation in Háj
When planning a stay in Háj, it is worth exploring the themes associated with the place: the Vápenka lime kiln, Horská louka u Háje, routes around Háj, and the ski and snowboard school with its visitor address in Háj.
Vápenka Lime Kiln: Furnaces and Building Remains
The Vápenka lime kiln is located in the forested landscape between Háj u Loučné pod Klínovcem and Kovářská. The original complex was built in the mid-19th century. Two octagonal Rumford shaft kilns and the remains of other buildings have been preserved. The site was fully restored in 2019 and is open to the public. A visit here therefore offers a chance to see the surviving kilns as well as traces of the larger historic complex.
Mountain Meadows and Protected Landscape
Horská louka u Háje lies in the valley of the Černá voda stream and is part of the Novodomské rašeliniště–Kovářská Special Protection Area. It protects a peat-rich mountain meadow with rare and endangered plant species. The area comprises a mosaic of different mountain meadow types: bog meadows, wet meadow thistle meadows, meadowsweet stands, golden oat-grass meadows, and mat-grass meadows. There are also transitions to wet and bog spruce forests. Nature enthusiasts can focus both on the different meadow types and on the transitions between open areas and forest habitats.
Routes of Different Lengths
The 15 km Loučná–Háj–Vápenka–Kovářská–České Hamry loop and back is a cycling route. Described as an easy ride with 295 m of elevation gain, it is also suitable for children. For comparison, the 8 km Kolem Vápenky Nordic walking loop is an alternative. It offers views of the former Vápenka lime kiln, as well as Palouk mrtvých and the Švédský pomník.
Another option is the Loučná pod Klínovcem educational trail, with 13 stops and a length of just under 17.5 km. The Loučenský Circuit passes through Háj and climbs to Meluzína, offering views of Oberwiesenthal and Loučná pod Klínovcem. The distances make the routes easy to distinguish: 8 km for Kolem Vápenky, 15 km for the cycling loop, and just under 17.5 km for the educational trail.
Ski and Snowboard Lessons in Winter
The visitor address of the Klínovec Ski and Snowboard School is Háj 178, 43191 Loučná pod Klínovcem. During the winter season, the school offers ski and snowboard lessons to the public for children and adults. Several beginner courses for skiing or snowboarding are held each year; the groups are intended for complete beginners and those with some experience. The school has two private lifts and its own gentle slopes with safe runouts for lessons. If you plan to take lessons during your trip, check the available course dates for your preferred travel period.
