Discover Velké Chvojno
Accommodation in Velké Chvojno
Velké Chvojno brings together the landscape of the České středohoří Protected Landscape Area, marked hiking trails, and protected cultural monuments. For travelers looking for a hotel, two interests stand out: routes through the landscape and local history, visible in its churches, monuments, and a statue. These themes can help you tailor your stay to your interests.
Landscape, Trails, and Location
The municipality lies within the České středohoří Protected Landscape Area. Marked hiking trails pass through Velké Chvojno; individual routes may change. It is therefore a good idea to check the latest information before planning a particular section. The road network also gives a general indication of how to get there: Road I/13 runs along the boundary of the municipality, and the D8 motorway is about two kilometers from Velké Chvojno.
The Church and Local History
In Arnultovice stands the Church of All Saints (Kostel Všech svatých), originally a Late Gothic building. The church was built on the site of an earlier building, first mentioned in 1352. This date refers to the church mentioned earlier and does not indicate the exact year the present Late Gothic building was constructed. After renovations to the interior were completed in 1999, the church resumed liturgical use and use for the community's cultural activities. The Church of All Saints is a protected cultural monument.
Remembrance and Baroque Sculpture
The light-granite monument in Velké Chvojno was erected in 1924 in memory of the victims of the First World War. Four plaques list the names of soldiers who fell on all fronts of the war. The dedication commemorates the victims; the plaques also record individual names.
Another form of cultural heritage is the Statue of St. John of Nepomuk (Socha sv. Jana Nepomuckého) near Žďár. The Baroque statue dates from 1748. In 1998, it was restored by the academic sculptor Michael Bílek of Petrovice. The dates refer to different events: 1748 dates the statue, while 1998 marks its restoration.
Atonement Crosses and Their Forms
A state-protected atonement cross from the second half of the 16th century stands by the cemetery wall, to the right of the main gate. Its wedge-shaped shaft bears an engraved lance with a socket, pointing upward. Its location, form, and period give this cross a distinct character among the local monuments.
A second atonement cross is set into the cemetery wall to the left of the rear gate and is also a state-protected cultural monument. The stone cross has a wedge-shaped base and straight arms; Greek crosses are carved at the ends of the horizontal beam. The two crosses differ both in their positions by the gates and in their design details: here, the lance on the shaft stands out, while there, it is the shape of the beam ends.
