Discover Vrskmaň
Accommodation in Vrskmaň
Vrskmaň offers opportunities for a trip that brings together local history, mining, and geology. Historic buildings and memorials sit alongside a geopark, cycling connections, and a covered ice rink. The location, bus connections, and variety of routes can help you plan your stay around your interests.
History and historic buildings
The first written mention of Vrskmaň dates from 1417. A former Neo-Gothic chapel, built in 1898 on the site of an older Baroque chapel dating from 1776, was demolished between 1972 and 1974; the chapel no longer survives.
Surviving historic features include a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk dating from 1886 and a Marian column with a statue of the Virgin Mary dating from 1887. The Marian column stands at the southern edge of the village square. The statue of Saint John of Nepomuk was moved to Vrskmaň from the former village of Kyjice.
Three reconciliation crosses and a large Baroque cross with a sculpture of Christ dating from 1731 once stood at the crossroads in front of House No. 4. This group of crosses was also moved to Vrskmaň from Kyjice; one of the reconciliation crosses has been lost. The history of these monuments therefore includes both their former location and their origins in Kyjice.
Another architectural landmark is Herrova Villa, a notable historic property. The dates 1862 and 1900 appear on the main façade, and a sandstone balcony sits above the entrance to its square courtyard. The building is privately divided and described as falling into disrepair.
Geology and mining history
A geopark featuring examples of North Bohemian rocks is located in the northern part of the village. The geological park is in the village park and was created to display rocks and minerals from nearby mines. The exhibition also includes finds from the Dobkovičky quarry and the Bohemian Central Highlands area. Exhibition details may change; check the latest information before visiting.
Vrskmaň lies about six kilometres northeast of Chomutov, on the edge of the Vršany open-pit mining area. The former Karel brown coal mine, also known as Bedřich, was located west of the village. It operated from the late 1850s or early 1860s until 1885. The village’s location on the edge of the mining area thus sits alongside a specific chapter in the history of brown coal extraction.
Cycling connections, ice rink, and getting there
Benders Arena is a covered ice rink of about 300 m². Individual training is available for hockey players and figure skaters. Facility details and the training programme may change; check the latest information before visiting.
Two different routes can be compared when planning your journey. A cycle path runs along the trackbed of a disused railway line, following cycle route 3114 from Chomutov towards Zaječice. Cycle route 3106 connects Vrskmaň with Vysoká Pec via the Újezd Reservoir dam, then continues to Jezeří. The routes therefore differ in that one follows a former railway line, while the other crosses the dam. As route conditions can change, check the route before setting out.
Vrskmaň is served by public buses in the Ústí nad Labem Region Integrated Transport System; regular connections run to Chomutov and Jirkov. Check the current timetables before travelling if you plan to use the bus to get here or to travel around the area.
