Březejc Between Nature and History
Accommodation in Březejc
When deciding on a trip to Březejc, there are several different areas of interest to consider: local history, landscape, and marked trails. It is worth distinguishing between the town, its cadastral area, and the planning area. Some routes pass through Březejc or run along the edge of an area, while others extend into the planning area. This geographic context can help you combine nature and culture with your own tour planning.
Landscape and trails
Forests cover 34.5 percent of the cadastral area. The Březejcký les regional biocentre lies on the southeastern edge of the planning area. It includes mixed forest, wetland, meadow, and aquatic habitats, including the small Holánek pond and a wet cultural landscape meadow. The natural area therefore encompasses several types of landscape, not just forest.
There are two different geographic contexts to distinguish when planning cycling trips: cycle route 5242 passes through Březejc on the road toward Ořechov. Cycle route 5240 between Tasov and Bohdalec extends into the Březejc planning area; its markings may need to be checked on site. A blue-marked hiking trail runs along the southern edge of the cadastral area. When planning a tour, follow its specific route: passing through the town, following the edge of the area, or running within the planning area each provides a different starting point for your plans.
Local history and memorials
Březejc was first mentioned in 1371 under the name Brzesye. The town is home to the Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk. A memorial cross to the soldiers from Březejc who fell in the First World War stands right beside it. The chapel and the cross bring together two different historical references in one place: the veneration of Saint John of Nepomuk and the memory of the fallen.
The Ladislav Klimek Memorial (Pomník Ladislav Klimek) stands in a forest 600 metres west of the edge of the town. It commemorates Czechoslovak pilot Lt. Ladislav Klimek, who died there on 16 May 1957 when a MiG-15 fighter aircraft crashed. Its location outside the town and its specific connection to the crash give this memorial a different significance from the chapel and cross in town.
Another cultural connection leads to Ruda: Březejc takes part in the St. Giles pilgrimage there. The parishes’ communities make harvest wreaths and flowers and carry them in a traditional costume procession before Mass. If you would like to include the pilgrimage in your trip, check the dates in advance.
Getting there and finding your way during your stay
Březejc lies on the road between Velké Meziříčí and Ořechov. There is another hiking connection via Jabloňov: an existing paved farm road between Březejc and Jabloňov can connect Březejc to the marked long-distance hiking trail Třebíč–Budišov–Tasov–Jabloňov–Ořechov–Velká Bíteš–Bílý potok Valley–Veverská Bítýška. Check the condition of the farm road before your tour. The road toward Ořechov, which cycle route 5242 follows, and this connection via Jabloňov therefore serve different navigation purposes.
If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Březejc, your interests can help guide your choice of destination: local history, marked trails, and the area’s different landscape types appeal to different interests. Before planning further, decide whether a cultural topic or a particular route is important to you. This will help you incorporate the local and landscape features mentioned here into your travel plans.
