Biskupice-Pulkov: Nature, Art and History
Accommodation in Biskupice-Pulkov
Biskupice-Pulkov combines the landscape of Rokytná Nature Park with specific art and history themes. This lets you decide in advance whether nature, art or local history will be the main focus of your stay.
Nature Park and Protected Area
Biskupice-Pulkov lies in the valley of the Rokytná River and within Rokytná Nature Park. A yellow-marked hiking trail runs through the nature park and can also be used for mountain biking. This gives you two options for planning your outings: on foot or by bike. Before setting out, check the trail markings and condition, as both can change. The European protected area Biskupice - škola, covering 0.0366 hectares, is another natural feature. This means you can choose between two distinct nature themes: the landscape framed by the river valley and nature park, and a protected area with a precisely stated size.
Biskupice Safari
Biskupice Safari comprises around 80 brightly painted concrete figures of animals and other creatures. The main group of 80 sculptures is currently being restored, is clearly visible from the road, and can be viewed from outside. The sculptures were created by Františka Blechová; art historians classify them as naïve art, known as Art Brut. The figures can therefore be appreciated both for their subjects and for their place in art history.
Church and Archaeological Traces
The Church of Saint Martin has been listed as a protected monument since 1958. Its central altarpiece was created by J. Winterhaltr in the second half of the 18th century. For those interested in art history, the church’s protected status and the attribution of its central painting complement each other: one concerns the building, the other a specific work. This offers two art-historical perspectives: the building’s protected status and the creation of a sacred work.
The two art-related features also differ in form: the safari comprises painted figures, while the church combines a specific central altarpiece with the building’s protected status. If you are choosing which art themes to focus on during your stay, these offer two distinct options: figurative art and sacred art.
The archaeological site “hrádek a středověké jádro obce Biskupice” comprises the remains of a ditch and rampart from a former fortification. Here, structural remains take center stage, while the church’s altarpiece also offers an art-historical perspective.
Pulkov Castle and Direct Purchases at the Brewery
The vanished Pulkov Castle lies about 1 km northwest of Pulkov and survives as a freely accessible site with traces in the terrain. The castle site is notable for its terrain features, while the archaeological site identifies the remains of a ditch and rampart. You can distinguish between these different historical points of interest when choosing what to see. Since access to the site may change, check its accessibility before visiting.
Beer from Biskupický pivovar Gajdoš can be bought directly at the brewery. If you plan to buy some directly, check before travelling whether this will be possible during your visit.
