Discover Budeč: Nature, Mining History and Architecture
Accommodation in Budeč
Budeč offers visitors several clearly distinct points of interest: the Babín landscape, traces of historic iron ore mining, and the Chapel of Panny Marie Sněžné on the village square. If you are planning a hotel stay, these themes can help you decide what interests you about the destination: nature, local history or architecture. The details below show how these areas of interest differ.
Landscape, Nature Reserve and Educational Trail
Part of Budeč’s cadastral area is occupied by the Babín Nature Reserve. Babín belongs to the Žďárské vrchy Protected Landscape Area, which means the nature reserve lies within the larger protected landscape area. The Babín Nature Reserve covers 218 hectares, of which 132 hectares make up the nature reserve proper. The area figures are clearly distinguished: the 132 hectares are included within the 218 hectares and are not counted in addition. The Oslava’s source area is located behind Babín Pond. This detail adds a specific local waterway connection to the information about the protected area.
You can walk the Babín Educational Trail in either direction, so you can choose which way to go. The route description was last updated on 18 January 2013; check before setting out whether the information is suitable for your visit.
Mining History and Water Management
Around 15 miners worked in the historic iron ore mines in Budeč. From the František mine, a drainage adit was driven from Budeč between 1845 and 1846. By 1847, the adit had reached a length of about 640 metres. The dates refer to different stages: 1845–1846 to the excavation work, and 1847 to the length reached. This distinguishes the construction phase from the later length figure.
Another aspect of the mining history concerns water: water from the shaft of the historic mine in Budeč was channelled through an adit to a pond near the flax-drying house. This water management adds a technical dimension to the information about ore mining and the workforce.
Water also features in two different contexts: the Oslava’s source area is located behind Babín Pond, while water from the historic mine was carried through an adit to a pond near the flax-drying house. The source area represents a natural connection to water, while the diversion reflects the technical use of water.
Chapel of Panny Marie Sněžné
On Budeč’s village square, the Chapel of Panny Marie Sněžné and its bell tower together form a new landmark and point of reference. In 2008, the chapel received the title “Vysočina Prestigious Building 2008”. The award applies to the chapel; the landmark is formed by the chapel and bell tower together. If you are more interested in architecture than landscape or mining history when choosing a destination, this building offers a specific point of interest.
