Discover Černá: Castle, Chapel and Breweries
Accommodation in Černá
When visiting Černá, the castle and St. Anthony’s Chapel offer two distinct architectural points of interest. Plan separately for access: the castle is closed to the public, while a visit to the chapel can be arranged through the local municipal office. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Černá, take this distinction into account when planning your visits.
Černá Castle and its architecture
Černá Castle was built in the Renaissance style at the end of the 16th century. It is a single-storey building with a mansard roof; its defining feature is a three-storey rectangular tower. The difference in storey count makes the tower the building’s dominant feature. The style, roof shape and tower describe different aspects: the Renaissance style classifies the building, while the mansard roof and tower define its form in detail. The contrast between the single-storey building and the taller tower gives the architectural description a clear focal point.
Following its reconstruction, the castle is closed to the public, including village residents. So do not plan a public visit. As access to private property may change, check the conditions before your trip.
St. Anthony’s Chapel by the Křivý Stream
The Chapel of St. Anthony of Padua stands on the village green beside the Křivý Stream. Its form and construction symbolise a wooden ark. The stream flows into the Mlýnský Pond below the village green, linking the green, stream and pond through a specific local waterway. The chapel was nominated as the Czech candidate for the Mies van der Rohe Award for Architecture. A visit can be arranged through the local municipal office.
Statue of St. John of Nepomuk
The life-size stone statue of St. John of Nepomuk stands next to the former forester’s lodge, which once belonged to Černá Castle. It is on the road to Arnolec, about 400 metres beyond Černá. The statue is generally dated to the 18th century and was renovated in 1994. While the chapel is located on the village green, the road and former forester’s lodge provide specific landmarks here.
Bell tower in Milíkov
Milíkov is a local district within the municipality. A bell tower there is listed as an immovable cultural monument. It is a polygonal central structure with a distinctive onion-shaped roof, an open lantern, a small roofed finial and a cross. In contrast with the castle’s rectangular, three-storey tower, the bell tower is defined by its polygonal shape and roof details. These different architectural forms distinguish the two towers.
Breweries and places to drink
Pivovar Černá is a small family brewery in Černá and has been operating since 2022. It makes unfiltered and unpasteurised craft beer, mainly from Czech floor-malted barley and Czech hops. At Pivovar Černá, the focus is therefore on the brewing method and ingredients. Pivo Pešek offers a visitor-oriented place to drink, with a covered outdoor terrace. These are different things to consider when planning your visit: the beer production described here, and the drinks service and outdoor seating there.
