Accommodation in Chlum
Chlum offers cultural and rural perspectives rooted in specific buildings and routes. Highlights include St. Wenceslas Church, historic structures, and paths in the surrounding area.
St. Wenceslas Church
Chlum’s landmark is the early Baroque Church of St. Wenceslas. Its foundation is attributed to the abbot of Třebíč. The date “around 1300” is also recorded for the church. At the same time, it retains Gothic masonry from the first half of the 14th century. In 1784 and 1785, the church was substantially raised and vaulted; the windows were also altered, and a sacristy, bell tower, and porch were added. The different structural elements bring several phases of its history to life: the early foundation and Gothic masonry were followed by the distinctive renovation of the late 18th century. The coexistence of these elements gives the church a layered architectural history.
Rural buildings
The farmstead in Chlum was built in 1848 on a hillside above the deep valley of the Jihlava. Its single-storey residence has richly stuccoed façades, and farm buildings enclose a courtyard. It is considered a valuable example of Podhorácko folk architecture. The complex thus combines a specific date of construction with the characteristic features of a historic farmstead.
The Pavlovský Mill is a rural-type mill on the Chlumský potok, built in the late 18th century. Another local landmark is Větrák. Beneath a wind-pump structure is a well 7 metres deep and 3 metres wide, lined with stones from Bílá skála; an information board stands beside it. Check the condition of Větrák on site before visiting.
Cycling and hiking routes, water
The Jihlava–Třebíč–Raabs cycling route passes through Chlum. On the section between Jihlava and Třebíč, it runs mostly along the Jihlava River. So the cycling route passes through the village; the reference to the river concerns the longer stretch between the two towns. A blue-marked hiking trail also runs through the area around Chlum. Check its current markings on site. A swimming reservoir is located nearby, northwest of the church. If you plan to visit, check public access and conditions on site beforehand.
The Bransouze castle site
The ruins of Bransouze Castle lie within the cadastral area of Chlum nad Jihlavou, but belong to the village of Bransouze on the opposite bank of the Jihlava. Archaeologically, the surviving fortifications are interpreted as a single-part castle site with a residential platform. This stands on an unwooded, sloping spur above the left bank of the Jihlava. The residential platform is approximately shaped like a right-angled circular sector; one of its straight sides is about 25 metres long.
