Dukovany: Castle, Church and Power Plant Tours
Accommodation in Dukovany
Technical tours and architectural history offer different ways to explore Dukovany. The nuclear power plant visitor centre focuses on technical topics; the castle, church and Rabštejn ruins add perspectives on architectural history and the landscape.
Tours at the Power Plant Visitor Centre
The Dukovany Nuclear Power Plant Visitor Centre offers a guided tour with interactive exhibits. They illustrate the path of the fuel, the production unit and the nuclear reactor. The tour thus connects a process-related topic—the fuel path—with two specific technical subjects: the production unit and the nuclear reactor. Another option is an interactive virtual tour of the plant’s controlled area. The options differ in format and focus: the guided tour uses exhibits to present technical topics, while the virtual tour takes you interactively through the controlled area. Before travelling, check the booking arrangements for the guided tour and the availability of the virtual tour.
Castle and Church: Architectural History in Dukovany
Dukovany Castle is Late Baroque and underwent extensive reconstruction from 2015 to 2017. “Late Baroque” describes the style, while the dates refer to the reconstruction phase; each answers a different question. The castle tour includes the Pantehon Hall, with original frescoes dating from 1790. Taken together, these dates invite a comparison between the more recent reconstruction and a precisely dated interior detail. The year 1790 refers to the frescoes, not to the reconstruction as a whole. Check separately for current access to the castle interior.
At the Church of St. Wenceslas (“Kostel sv. Václava”), it is worth distinguishing its origins from its present appearance: its Gothic origins date back to the 13th century, while its present Late Baroque appearance dates from the 18th century. It has been protected as a cultural monument since 1958. The castle frescoes also date from the 18th century. The castle and church therefore have a datable connection to the same period, although the details refer to different things: an original interior feature in the castle, and the church’s present architectural appearance.
Rabštejn Ruins and the Jihlava River
The Rabštejn ruins stand on a steep rock above the Jihlava River. The surviving features include ramparts, ditches and small sections of wall from the outer enclosure wall of the inner area. The site’s position above the river and its named structural remains offer two perspectives: its setting in the landscape and the specific surviving structures. Unlike the dated interior details of the castle and the construction phases of the church, Rabštejn is primarily about the terrain and exterior structures.
The Dukovany area also borders the European Site of Importance CZ0614134 – Údolí řeky Jihlavy.
Dukovanské stezky
A notice from 2023 gives the 27th edition of Dukovanské stezky and describes it as having a history of more than 25 years. If you want to include the event in your travel plans, check the specific dates in advance.
