Hrotovice: Cultural Monuments, Museums and Nature Trail
Accommodation in Hrotovice
In Hrotovice, architectural and art history sit alongside museum exhibits and nature education. The chateau, church and Baroque sculptures represent different historical periods; two museums offer their own distinct focuses on interactive learning and historic mobile phones. The Hrotovicko Nature Trail explores animals, plants and the development of the landscape. You can therefore explore the town’s attractions according to your interest in cultural history, technology or nature.
Chateau, Calvary and Church
The Calvary group consists of three stone crosses. It is located opposite Hrotovice Chateau, at the intersection of Zákostelní and Znojemská streets. In the third quarter of 2020, the group was declared a cultural monument. The chateau itself has been protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic since 1968. It stands on medieval foundations and features Late Renaissance and Baroque construction phases.
St. Lawrence Church has a different sequence of architectural changes: it was originally Romanesque, was remodeled in the Gothic style in the mid-14th century, and underwent Baroque alterations in the second half of the 17th century. These periods therefore represent successive phases in the history of the same church. By comparison, the chateau combines medieval foundations with later construction phases. This offers different ways to look at the two buildings: the church through its alterations, and the chateau through its foundations and architectural history.
Baroque Sculptures and Their Context
The date of creation, material and location offer different points of reference for the sculptures, too. The statue of St. Donatus in Hrotovice is a Baroque sculpture made of fine-grained sandstone. An unknown artist created it around 1730. The statue of St. Francis of Paola is also anonymous and dates from the first half of the 18th century. It is part of an ensemble of Baroque sculptures created in Hrotovice under the Lords of Hirzenau at Hagendorf. The approximate date for St. Donatus is more specific than the time period given for St. Francis of Paola.
The life-size statue of St. Florian near Hrotovice is made of shell limestone. It stands among mature trees in the middle of fields southeast of the town. Unlike the information about St. Donatus and St. Francis of Paola, the details for St. Florian highlight its scale and landscape setting as well as its material. The three works can thus be categorized according to different features, even though the same kind of dating information is not available for each.
Two Museums with Different Focuses
The Muzeum Hrotovicka is interactive and educational, and is primarily aimed at families with children. The Muzeum mobilních telefonů, by contrast, focuses on historic mobile phones. It displays suitcase-like devices that looked more like landline telephones and weighed up to around five kilograms, as well as their later, compact successors. The contrast between the bulky devices and their smaller successors gives the collection a clearly identifiable technological focus.
The idea originated in 2019, when the plan was developed to show the public a private collection of old mobile phones. This means that two different approaches to presenting exhibits coexist in the town: the Muzeum Hrotovicka is described as interactive and educational, while the Muzeum mobilních telefonů centers on a collection and the changing forms of its devices. If you are interested in museums, these focuses are therefore not interchangeable.
Hrotovicko Nature Trail
The Hrotovicko Nature Trail is five kilometers long and suitable for pedestrians, cyclists, strollers and wheelchair users. Information panels share details about animals, trees and flowering plants in the forest, as well as the area’s geomorphological development. This technical term refers to the formation and development of landforms. The nature trail therefore covers both individual nature topics and the development of the landscape.
Its focus thus differs from that of the buildings and museums: the nature trail highlights the forest and landscape development, while the history of the church, chateau and sculptures explores different historical periods. Its stated length and the user groups it accommodates can help you consider the nature trail as a distinct nature-focused activity when planning a stay in Hrotovice.
