Mohelno combines local history with natural history, making it a destination for a range of interests. The Church of All Saints and the historic building complex in the center provide a tangible point of reference for architectural history. At the Muzeum Mohelno, natural history and local traditions sit side by side; the nature trail begins at an Iron Age burial mound. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus more on architecture, local crafts, or nature and early settlement.

Church and Local History

The Church of All Saints is mentioned as a parish church as early as 1234. It is an east-facing, two-nave building with Gothic perimeter walls. “Two-nave” describes the division of the church interior into two naves; “east-facing” refers to its orientation toward the east. The perimeter walls are another feature of the church’s exterior form. The north side aisle, known as the Senoradská Chapel, was added in 1512. The two dates mark distinct milestones: an early mention of the parish church and a later addition to its north side.

In the center of Mohelno, the listed Church of All Saints, the Baroque rectory, the bell tower and the Neoclassical school form a historic building complex. Baroque and Neoclassical refer to different styles within this ensemble. This broadens the focus from church history to a town center where several historic building types belong together.

Museum: Natural History and Crafts

On June 10, 2019, the Muzeum Mohelno was moved to the attic of Galerie Stodola at Mohelno No. 86. The museum features a natural history section focused primarily on the Mohelenská hadcová step nature reserve. It also presents local traditions and significant crafts that have died out, including stove building and painted furniture. The two focus areas offer different perspectives: the natural history section draws attention to a protected area, while the crafts explore local cultural history. Stove building and painted furniture represent distinct craft fields. If you are planning a visit, check visitor arrangements separately.

Nature Trail and Cycling Routes

The Mohelenská hadcová step is a national nature reserve. At the start of the nature trail is an Iron Age burial mound, a reminder of earlier settlement. These offer different points of interest: the reserve’s protected status is the focus at the reserve, while the burial mound highlights the archaeological past at the trailhead. Mohelno thus offers both a natural heritage connection through a protected area and a tangible reference to an earlier period of settlement.

Cyclists will also find a named route to follow. A regional route description from February 2024 mentions the long-distance Mlynářská stezka cycling route, which runs through Mohelno together with sections of cycling routes 5106 and 403. The route adds an active option to trip planning alongside local history and nature. As signage and route alignments may change, check both before setting out.
