Moravec brings together several distinct cultural and historical themes. Moravec Castle, the parish church of the Finding and Exaltation of the Holy Cross, the castle park and the granary offer different perspectives on architectural history and the landscape. There is also a cycling route that passes through the town. When planning your trip, both historical dates and different visitor access conditions are important, especially for the castle and its summer cultural events.

Moravec Castle and its history

The present-day Moravec Castle was preceded by a medieval fortress, mentioned in 1347. After a fire in 1825, the castle was rebuilt and remodelled in the Neoclassical style. The two years therefore mark different chapters: 1347 refers to the mention of the earlier fortress, while 1825 marks the fire and the subsequent Neoclassical redesign. This distinction in time places the medieval history and the later castle in context without treating them as the same building phase.

Moravec Castle is not usually open to the public. Cultural events are held in the courtyard in summer. If you plan to attend one, check the specific date and access arrangements in advance. The summer programme is a seasonal reason to plan a trip, but it does not mean the castle is generally open.

Church and granary

The parish church of the Finding and Exaltation of the Holy Cross originated as a castle chapel dating from 1628. It was restored after the fire of 1825, and its tower was remodelled in 1890. The fire provides a shared point of reference in the histories of the castle and the church, but their architectural histories have different emphases: for the castle, the focus is on the Neoclassical rebuilding, while the church’s history also includes its origins as a chapel and the later remodelling of its tower. This makes it possible to compare the church’s chronology with the castle’s development without conflating them.

The granary of Moravec, on the southwestern edge of the castle park, offers another perspective. It retains its original floor plan and historic structural elements. Unlike the histories of the castle and church, which can be readily organised around events and dates, the granary draws attention to its architectural form. The floor plan concerns the layout of the interior; the structural elements provide insight into how it was built. In this way, the historic structure of a building becomes a theme alongside chronology.

Castle park and cycling route

The castle park adds a botanical focus to the buildings. Its plantings include rhododendrons, azaleas, Jeffrey pines and silver firs. Shrubs and conifers thus feature alongside one another, forming a distinct aspect of the area’s history. A sign at the entrance to the castle park provides information about the trees there. It helps visitors who want to explore the planting as well as the history of the buildings.

There is also a specific option for a cycling trip: cycling route No. 5243 passes through Moravec. This adds an active travel option to the cultural and park themes. If you include Moravec in a cycling tour, check the latest route information before setting out, as conditions may change. The historic sights and the cycling route can thus be considered as different reasons for choosing the destination.
