Myslibořice brings together several different historical periods in its buildings. The Church of St. Luke combines a Gothic core with Baroque design; the Chapel of St. Tekla and the castle add further architectural features. The castle park and the region’s landscape offer subjects of their own if you want to shape your stay around cultural history and the surrounding area.

Church of St. Luke: Gothic Core and Baroque Details

The Church of St. Luke has a preserved Gothic core dating from the 13th century and a remarkable Baroque façade. Notable bells date from 1550 and 1609. Four Baroque statues stand in front of the church: those of St. Florian, St. John of Nepomuk, St. Alois and St. Francis. At this same church, you can therefore see medieval building fabric, Baroque design and details of the furnishings anchored by specific dates.

The protected area around the church includes the church itself, the cemetery wall, Josef Suk’s gravestone and the grounds of the site. If you are comparing church architecture, the contrast between the preserved Gothic core and the Baroque façade is particularly striking here. The bells and statues add further tangible evidence of the church’s furnishings.

Chapel of St. Tekla on the Slope

The Chapel of St. Tekla is a small Baroque church on a slope, surrounded by a cemetery. A stucco plaque bearing the year 1755 is set in the gable. The dated plaque is a striking architectural detail, while the hillside location describes the character of the building.

A spring rises below the chapel on the south side of the slope. Its water is described as clean and healthy; the spring is monitored by the hydrometeorological institute. This links the chapel to a specific feature of the local landscape. The described spring and the Baroque architecture are distinct aspects of the area around the small church.

Castle and Castle Park

Myslibořice Castle is a Baroque, three-wing, two-storey building in a U shape. It stands on the site of a former 14th-century fortress. The U shape, three wings and two storeys give the complex a clearly described architectural form; the former fortress adds an older historical reference to its architectural history.

The castle park is listed as a cultural monument, covers seven hectares and was originally characterized by floodplain forest. The park and castle thus offer two different ways to explore the site’s history: the Baroque form of the building and the location of the former fortress on the one hand, and the extent of the parkland and its original floodplain-forest character on the other.

Landscape and Historical Finds

Geomorphologically, Myslibořice and its surroundings belong to the Českomoravská vrchovina; most of the area lies within the Jevišovická pahorkatina. The average elevation is 483 metres. Notable high points include Stříbrná at 531 metres and Svatocheň at 523 metres. At 556 metres, Na Skalním is the highest point, 73 metres above the average elevation. Numerous ponds are typical of the region.

An archaeological report also links a pond in Myslibořice to a historical find. In April 2007, the discovery of a prehistoric settlement on its bottom was reported. According to archaeologist Milan Vokáč of the Muzeum Vysočiny, this is the first Neolithic settlement excavated in the Vysočina Region. The statement is thus attributed to the historical report and the assessment of the named archaeologist.
