Osová Bítýška: Church, Castle and Culture
Accommodation in Osová Bítýška
Osová Bítýška combines distinctive church architecture with the history of Osová Castle and a local culture that ranges from contemporary art to traditional dances. For planning your trip, this gives you a choice of different focuses: historic buildings, art and regional traditions.
Church and Castle History
The Parish Church of St James the Greater is the oldest historic building in Osová Bítýška. A free-standing tower and remnants of the fortification walls survive from its late-medieval fortifications. The church’s Baroque gate is one of the few monuments of its kind in Czechia. This means that two clearly distinct periods meet in one building: the late-medieval fortifications and the Baroque gate. The tower and wall remnants also help explain the church’s former defensive role.
Osová Castle has been the surviving centre of the estate associated with Osová Bítýška since at least the early 14th century. The castle and park grounds are surrounded by a park with small structures, watercourses and ponds. Compared with the parish church, the castle’s historical role within the estate takes centre stage; the park grounds complement this historical connection with a landscape perspective. This lets you distinguish between church architecture, estate history and parkland when planning your trip.
Art and Local Traditions
Since 1990, Sýpka Gallery in Osová has served as an exhibition gallery for contemporary art. During the season from spring to autumn, accompanying events at the intersection of visual and performing arts, as well as music performances, take place. The gallery thus provides a contemporary counterpoint to the older architectural and estate histories. If you are planning a trip around its events programme, the period from spring to autumn is the relevant seasonal timeframe.
Krojované lidové tance and Chasa have a long-standing tradition in Osová Bítýška. In 2007, Krojované lidové tance were first associated with the Svatojakubská pouť. Since 2015, Moravská špacírka has also been danced at the Svatojakubská pouť. The chronology distinguishes between two developments: the first association of Krojované lidové tance with the pilgrimage and the later addition of another dance. This helps place the local tradition in the context of its different time periods.
Cycling in the Area
Nationally marked cycle route No. 5241 runs through the Osová Bítýška area. If you plan to use the route for a cycling trip, check the current markings and surface conditions before setting out, as both may change.
