Otín combines a historic village street with buildings, local customs and trails through the countryside. The historic zone follows the original street, now road II/349; the houses face the street with their gable ends. The street layout and the orientation of the buildings together shape the character of this zone. There is also a small village pond on the village green.

Village History and Buildings

Otín was first mentioned in written records in 1379. After serfdom was abolished, Otín’s three historic parts were united into one municipality. These details refer to different stages: the date marks the first written mention, while the merger relates to the later municipal structure. Together with the historic street layout, they offer different starting points for exploring the village’s development.

Otín’s bell tower is registered as an immovable cultural monument; an image of the Madonna is above its entrance. A cross dating from 1856 stands on the road in Otín, near Smejkalova stodola. These buildings offer different details: for the bell tower, its protected status and the image above the entrance; for the cross, the year 1856. The local heritage can thus be explored through both a protected building and a dated cross.

Chapel and Local Customs

The annual Velikonoční hrkání begins and ends at the village chapel. On Good Friday, the procession passes through the village three times. Summer pilgrimages to the Chapel of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Otín took place in 2023 and 2024. On 30 April 2022, a maypole decorated with a green wreath and colorful ribbons was traditionally erected. Afterward, SDH Otín organized a witch-burning event. An annual Easter custom thus sits alongside events tied to specific years. If such an occasion is important to your trip, check the current dates before booking.

Countryside and Trails Around Otín

Otín’s municipal area is characterized by rounded ridges, long slopes and broad valleys along the headwaters of streams. A cycle route also passes through the municipal area. On foot, the route to Pokornův Cross first follows a local road beyond the village, then continues along a field path. As trail conditions can change, it is advisable to check them before setting out.

Another option is the 10.5-kilometer route from Měřín via Křekovec and Frankův Zhořec to Otín, described in 2014. It follows field and forest paths to the Žďárka stream and Hájenci Křekovec. The details provided for the two routes differ: for the route to Pokornův Cross, the change from road to field path and the destination are specified; for the route from Měřín, a total distance is also given. You can choose between a local walk to a single cross and the longer route with a stated distance.
