Sedlice: Reservoir, Dam and Trails
Accommodation in Sedlice
Reservoir and location
The Sedlice Reservoir lies below the village of Sedlice in the rugged landscape of the Křemešnická vrchovina. It was built in 1927 behind the confluence of the Hejlovka and Hejnický potok rivers, near the point where the Želivka is formed by these two waterways. A road leads to the dam from Želiv through Sedlice to Humpolec. Two points of reference are helpful for finding your way: the reservoir lies below the village, while the dam can be reached via the road connection described above. The sequence Želiv–Sedlice–Humpolec also places the dam in a specific succession of places.
Dimensions and structure
The reservoir covers 38 hectares; its impounded water extends for three kilometres. The 38 hectares describe the area, while the three kilometres describe the length of the impounded water. A 120-metre-long stone bridge with ten arches and a concrete parapet spans the crest of the dam. Compared with the three-kilometre extent of the water, the bridge is much shorter; its dimensions refer to a single structure. The dam is open to the public, so you can see the bridge and its position on the dam crest in person. This places the extent of the reservoir and the specific dimensions of the bridge side by side at different scales.
Forests and activities
The forests around the Sedlice Reservoir invite you to go for walks and are suitable for mushroom picking. These activities take place in the surrounding landscape. At the water, recreation, water sports and sport fishing are among the reservoir’s uses, but remain secondary to its main purpose. For planning, it is helpful to distinguish between an outing in the forests and activities on the water: forest-based activities and recreational uses of the reservoir have different focuses.
Access and visiting
The Sedlice Reservoir and its dam are open to the public. The interior of the Sedlická hydroelektrárna is not normally accessible to tourists. However, an individual tour can be requested from the operator. Check on this possibility in advance, as such arrangements can change. Public access to the reservoir and dam should be distinguished from the possibility of visiting the inside of the power station. If you would like to see inside the power station, factor this limitation into your plans and check the local conditions before your visit.
Routes to the Sedlická hydroelektrárna
A red-marked hiking trail leads to the Sedlická hydroelektrárna; a cycling route runs parallel to it. The site can be reached from several starting points and combined with other tourist destinations. When choosing a route, the options differ by mode of travel: the marked trail is a hiking route, while the parallel route is for cycling. The several starting points offer flexibility in planning your trip. Before setting out, check the current route and markings, as trail conditions and markings can change. You can make the hydroelektrárna the main destination of your trip or combine it with other tourist destinations.
