Sněžné: Art, Churches and Routes

Sněžné is located in the Žďárské vrchy Protected Landscape Area. You can explore the town during your stay according to your interests: the gallery and Japanese rock garden focus on art, while the churches and former cemetery offer insights into architectural and local history. A walk, a longer route and a pump track add outdoor options to these attractions. When choosing your hotel, you can consider whether you mainly want to visit cultural sites or set aside time for a route through the town and its surroundings.

Churches and Local History

The Church of the Holy Cross was built in Sněžné in the mid-18th century and remodeled in the Baroque style. Another striking religious building is the Protestant church, a landmark of the town and its surroundings. Its interior was last redesigned in 1994, following a design by Ostrava artist Daniel Balabán. The two churches offer different perspectives on architectural history, without requiring you to focus on any one particular theme.

Traces of the former cemetery are also part of the town’s history: iron grave crosses can be seen at its site. They were made in the foundries of Kadov and Milovy. The crosses provide a distinct historical point of interest alongside the church buildings.

Gallery and Japanese Rock Garden

The Sněžné Gallery is a year-round gallery selling paintings, housed in a historic building on Sněžné’s square. It was founded in 1997 by painters Jan Odvárka, Rudolf Němec and Pavel Mertlík. Its program includes artists’ exhibitions, readings and other art events. This art venue thus combines the sale of paintings with an events program. Individual events and visitor arrangements may change; check the latest information before your visit.

The Japanese rock garden has been created over the years by teacher Pavel Šimon in the spirit of Buddhist and Shinto traditions. It consists of a dry area and a wet area; two Japanese dragons guard the garden. Visitors can also see a bonsai exhibition and buy bonsai trees, bonsai pots and ceramics on site. When planning your visit, the garden’s design is not the only thing to consider: there is also the bonsai exhibition and the items available for purchase. Visitor arrangements and offerings may change, so check the latest information before your visit.

Walk, Route and Pump Track

The walk around Sněžné passes the Church of the Holy Cross and is nine kilometers long. In places, it follows the local educational trail “S Kvíčalou za humna.” At 42 kilometers, the Sněženská Route is considerably longer. It starts in the square in Sněžné and leads to the rock formations Devět skal, Malinská skála, Dráteničky and Čtyři palice. When comparing the routes, both their distances and their named destinations are key: a loop around the town that passes the church, or a longer route to four rock formations. Route details may change; check the latest information before setting out.

The Sněžné pump track is located behind the Protestant church. It can be used with bicycles, skateboards and scooters. These options are different from the routes through the town and to the rock formations. Since the condition of the facility and how it can be used may change, check the latest usage information before your visit.
