Světnov: Nature in the Valley, History in the Village
Accommodation in Světnov
Světnov is located in the Žďárské vrchy Protected Landscape Area. Two themes are especially relevant when planning a trip: the Světnovské údolí Nature Monument and the evidence of the village’s history spanning several centuries. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Světnov, these highlights can help you decide whether the landscape, the village’s history, or both will shape your trip.
Nature Monument and Spring Snowflakes
Světnovské údolí is a nature monument. The protected area preserves significant meadow communities and meandering waterways, along with numerous protected plant and animal species. The valley also includes a meandering stream and its floodplain. In spring, protected spring snowflakes blanket the banks of the valley. The best time to visit is considered to be late March and early April, when the flowers are at their most abundant. The exact blooming time may shift depending on the weather. If you want to plan your trip around the flowers, this time of year offers a specific guide.
On Foot or by Bike
A hike into Světnovské údolí follows a forest path alongside the Sklenský potok and leads into the valley. A cycling route from Zámek Žďár leads to the Světnovské údolí nature reserve. The two routes have different highlights: the hike follows a named path alongside the stream, while the cycling route specifies Zámek Žďár as the starting point and the nature reserve as the destination. This lets you choose between a forest walk and a cycling route with clearly identified start and finish points.
History and Stone Landmarks
Světnov was founded before 1293 through the colonizing activities of Žďár Monastery. The village was first mentioned in writing in 1366; the two dates therefore mark different stages in its history. Later landmarks also point to different periods: in 1854, a chapel replaced the old wooden bell tower. In the northern part of Světnov stands a stone cross dating from 1848, while in the southern part, beside an old road, there is a wayside shrine dating from 1719.
The stone road bridge over the Stržský potok was built in 1847 to replace an older wooden bridge and is a cultural monument. After the First World War, two monuments to the fallen were erected in Světnov. Prokop Paeonius is also part of the village’s history: he was born in Světnov in 1581 and was a poet, writer, and professor at the Faculty of Medicine of Charles University.
The Křížový kámen and Getting There
The Křížový kámen is a piece of sandstone carved with a cross whose arms end in trefoil shapes. It stands beside an old path in the forests of Světnovské údolí. The stone is likely to commemorate the death of a Russian officer as troops returned through the Bohemian lands after the Napoleonic Wars. This remains a probable explanation.
For the period 2020 to 2030, the municipal development plan lists Světnov as a municipality served by public buses within the integrated transport system and names ZDAR, a.s., and ARRIVA VÝCHODNÍ ČECHY a.s. as operators. Check the current timetables and operator information before travelling.
