The village combines a Natura 2000 site with a 19th-century chapel and a seasonal events calendar. It is therefore worth considering the time of year when planning your visit: hiking trails, cross-country ski trails and events each offer something different, and specific dates can be checked in advance.

Nature and seasonal activities

A notable natural feature is Dolní rybník u Újezda: the 9.2421-hectare site is part of the Natura 2000 network and protects a population of the species Coleanthus subtilis, which is rich in individual plants. Its features include vegetation in temporarily drained ponds, reed beds and cultivated meadows. For nature enthusiasts, the focus is therefore on protecting a specific habitat and a named species.

Nearby Blažkov is 693 metres high and belongs to the Arnolecké hory. In summer, the area around Újezd has a dense network of well-marked hiking trails; in winter, the landscape is crisscrossed by cross-country ski trails. Check trail markings and conditions locally before hiking. Snow cover and trail usability vary. European and local cycling routes also pass through the area, following a dense network of forest roads. Check signs and conditions locally for these routes, too.

Chapel, border and local history

Újezd lies on the historic provincial border between Moravia and Bohemia. The village has the 19th-century Chapel of Panny Marie Královny; a cross stands on its tower. The pilgrimage in honour of Panny Marie Královny takes place around 22 August. If you would like to include this date in your travel plans, check the exact programme locally.

Local place names also tell a story: Újezd was formerly also known as Oujezd, Aujezd and “Olšový”. The name “Olšový” referred to the many alder trees around Prostřední rybník.

Events throughout the year

The Újezd Tourist Club was founded in 2013 and organises trips, gatherings and nature-related events. It also organises the Christmas market, which takes place every December. Check the exact market dates locally. Previous markets have featured craft demonstrations, with various craftspeople showing their skills and the results of their work. Punsch, mulled wine and hot mead have been served; guests could also sample potato cakes baked on a stove and served with poppy seeds and plum jam. Check in advance which stalls and foods are planned for the specific edition.

Other recurring events include Setkání na hranici, a regular gathering on the provincial border between Újezd and Sirákov. The “Slavnosti rumu” event is also held regularly. Check dates and programmes locally.

Planning your journey

There is no railway stop in Újezd, which is also relevant when planning your journey. Take this into account when choosing your destination and searching for connections; check the right connection separately for your travel dates.
