Velká Bíteš: Architectural History, Museum and Mill Trail
Accommodation in Velká Bíteš
For a stay in Velká Bíteš, you can focus on different things: the history of the town hall, the Church Fortress of St. John the Baptist, the town museum and a trail along former mills. If you are looking for a hotel, considering your interests can help you decide where to start. Are you mainly interested in historic architectural styles and collections, or would you also like to plan a walking route?
Historic buildings and the townscape
The town hall can be understood through two distinct historical reference points. Its current location has been documented since 1480. The town hall building acquired its present appearance in 1886: a new Neo-Renaissance-style building was constructed on the original cellars, based on a design by architect Mór Kallina. The year 1480 refers to the documented location of the town hall; 1886 marks the building’s present appearance. This clearly distinguishes the history of the location from the later architectural form.
The oldest part of Velká Bíteš forms a long, spacious square lined with townhouses; this area has been protected as a historic monument since 1958. The shape of the square and the surrounding townhouses give the historic townscape a different character from that of a single town hall building.
The Church Fortress of St. John the Baptist is an exceptional monument of High Gothic architecture. It is surrounded by a continuous stone wall with bastions; loopholes are still preserved in the bastions. The wall, bastions and loopholes make the defensive design clearly visible. High Gothic architecture places the building in its stylistic context, while the fortifications offer a different architectural perspective. A bastion is a projecting part of a fortification.
Town museum: collection and exhibition
The town museum offers two distinct ways to explore. The collection’s oldest objects include individual medieval items and archaeological finds; alongside these, the mineral and rock exhibition also features examples from the most recent finds. Individual exhibits may change. The collection and exhibition therefore differ in both subject and timeframe: historic objects are presented alongside examples from the most recent finds in a natural history exhibition. If you are interested in both, the museum brings together historic collection pieces and a natural history exhibition.
The mill trail
The “Už ty mlýny doklapaly” trail offers a different focus. Near Vlkov, Křoví and Velká Bíteš, it passes nine former mills and comprises two circular routes with a total length of 19 kilometres. The 19 kilometres refers to the combined length of the two circular routes, not the length of each individual loop. The mill theme gives this walking option a specific focus. When planning, you should also take note of the condition of some of the trail markings and bear it in mind when considering the route.
