Hostišová offers several specific starting points for a trip: religious buildings, recurring annual traditions, natural features, and memorial sites. The dates of local festivals and masses provide a clear reason to plan a stay around a particular date. Older traces and monuments also offer a glimpse into different periods of the town’s history.

Local History and Religious Buildings

The settlement of Hostišová was first mentioned in writing in 1397. A precisely dated record of local history is the Baroque stone cross “Barokní kříž,” made of coarse-grained sandstone. Jakub Polášek erected it in 1756; it is listed in the List of Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic under number 1909.

The “Kaple Navštívení Panny Marie” chapel was built in 1869 on the site of an earlier bell tower. Above Hostišová is also the “Křížová cesta” Stations of the Cross, which was solemnly opened on September 26, 2009. The cross, chapel, and Stations of the Cross are distinct points of interest for anyone particularly interested in religious buildings and local history during their stay.

Festivals and Dates Throughout the Year

On July 2, two local designations coincide: the annual Hody celebration is called “Náš svátek,” and the mass held on that day is the local pilgrimage of the same name. Masses are also held in the chapel every year on May 2 and September 2. If you would like to plan your trip around these dates, check the current program before traveling.

The carnival celebration includes a masked parade led by a bear. It takes place on the last Saturday before Ash Wednesday. Since the date is tied to Ash Wednesday, take the date of the celebration into account when planning.

There is also an annual New Year’s tradition: climbing the nearby hill Hřeben. It is 399 m above sea level; participants receive a special New Year’s stamp. It is advisable to check the specific date and current event arrangements before your trip.

Landscape, Trees, and Memorial Sites

The landscape around present-day Hostišová shows traces of settlement from every period since the Older Stone Age. Paleolithic finds date to around 10,000 BC. This broad time span differs markedly from the precisely dated buildings and memorial sites of more recent local history.

In the fields above Hostišová stands a common pear tree (Pyrus communis), about 250 years old, with a trunk circumference of 370 cm. In the center, an English oak (Quercus robur) with a trunk circumference of 270 cm grows on the grounds of a locksmith’s workshop. It is associated with the history of the Vojáček family: during the First Republic, festivities were held in their garden, with national flags hung on the oak.

Memorial sites include the “Památník Clay - Eva” monument, unveiled on May 6, 2005. The Clay parachute group landed during the night of April 12–13, 1944, in the Trnovec area, within the cadastral territory of the municipality of Hostišová. Another monument commemorates the partisan Metoděj Ponížil. He died on May 5, 1945, during the liberation, aged 29.

Facilities Below the Chapel

Below the chapel are a workout area and a children’s playground. In addition to religious and historical topics, these are two specific local facilities. Which of these aspects matters most when choosing your travel dates depends on whether you prefer to plan around recurring events, history, or natural features.
