Getting there and finding your way
Hulín railway station is on the 303 Kojetín–Valašské Meziříčí and 330 Přerov–Břeclav lines. The Záhlinické rybníky Nature Park in the wider area around Hulín can be reached by bicycle, train, car or bus. This means that two separate questions are relevant when planning your trip: getting to Hulín by train and choosing a means of transport for a visit to the park in the wider area. Check current timetables in advance if you plan to travel by bus or train.
Romanesque architecture and the history of the town
The Church of Saint Wenceslas was founded around the first quarter of the 13th century. Originally, it was a single-nave Romanesque building with an apse. The Romanesque portal is the most significant and valuable surviving element among the remains of the Romanesque church building; it dates from the first half of the 13th century. For travellers interested in architecture, the building’s form and a particularly notable feature come together here. The church is therefore a tangible point of reference for Hulín’s medieval architectural history.
The first written mention of Hulín’s existence dates from 1224, when the Bohemian King Přemysl Otakar I came there. In the 1290s, Hulín’s administrative centre underwent extensive rebuilding under Dětřich, Bruno’s representative. The fortress became a castle, and the entire complex was fortified with ramparts and a moat. The two stages of development can be placed in chronological context: the early mention of the town and its Romanesque architectural history were followed by the rebuilding of the administrative centre in the 1290s.
Nature in the wider area
The Záhlinické rybníky Nature Park lies in the wider area around Hulín. The Zámeček forest and the adjoining ponds are part of the nature park; the forest is home to large, old oak trees. The park is home to up to 270 bird species, including species that nest there year-round and migratory birds. This gives your trip a different focus from the Romanesque church: here, the emphasis is on the forest, ponds and birdlife.
