Podhradní Lhota: Castle Ruins, Chapel and Cycling Loop
Accommodation in Podhradní Lhota
Podhradní Lhota lies at the foot of Kelčský Javorník, the highest peak in the Hostýnské vrchy. Two castle ruins and the Tesák cycling loop offer different cultural and active points of interest for a stay; the cycling loop passes through the village. The railway station and chapel add specific local features to the picture. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider historic sites, a named cycling route and travel information as separate topics.
Castle Ruins and History
Šaumburk is a castle ruin southwest of Podhradní Lhota, above the village. The castle was built in the years after 1272 by Olomouc Bishop Bruno of Schauenburg. Relief-like remains of buildings, as well as ramparts and ditches, have been preserved at Šaumburk. From Šaumburk, there are views of the ridges of the Hostýnské vrchy and the surrounding landscape. The construction period and builder provide the ruin with a historical context; the surviving features add tangible traces in the terrain.
The Nový Šaumburk castle ruin lies southeast of Podhradní Lhota, at the site called Bašta, at an elevation of 530 m above sea level; Šaumburk, by contrast, is southwest of the village, above it. Zubříč is also used for Nový Šaumburk, but is considered an incorrect name. Remains of the outer rampart and a ditch, as well as sections of wall, are clearly visible on the oval central area of Nový Šaumburk. The similar-sounding names can be distinguished by different features: Šaumburk is characterized by its construction period after 1272 and views of the landscape, while Nový Šaumburk can be identified by Bašta, its elevation and its oval area.
The Tesák Cycling Loop
The Tesák cycling loop is 32 km long and runs via Troják through Podhradní Lhota. From Podhradní Lhota, it continues to Rajnochovice and then connects to Route 5120 and the Hostýnské vrchy nature trail. The 32 km distance gives you a concrete basis for planning your ride; the named connections show how the route continues beyond the village. Unlike the castle ruins, the loop focuses on distance and route, while history, location and surviving traces help you understand Šaumburk and Nový Šaumburk.
