Vsetín can be explored through its architectural history, views and trails with a range of themes. Vsetín Castle combines Renaissance origins with later Neoclassical alterations; the permanent exhibition is dedicated to the history and traditions of Wallachia. There are also churches with different historical connections, as well as routes ranging from an approximately two-kilometre city walk to longer nature trails. You can therefore focus on culture and landscape according to the themes that interest you most.

Castle, exhibition and architectural history

Vsetín Castle was originally built in the 17th century in the Renaissance style and later remodelled in the Neoclassical style. In the permanent exhibition “Živá paměť regionu” (The Living Memory of the Region), the museum uses modern technologies to present the history, traditions and other distinctive features of Wallachia. The focus is therefore not only on the building, but also on the region whose culture the exhibition explores.

The 60-metre-high observation point in the castle tower offers expansive views across Vsetín. Below the castle, in Horní město, is the castle park. The castle, observation point and park bring together architecture, views and green space in one place.

Churches and façade decoration

The Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was founded in 1683 and is part of the post-White Mountain Baroque tradition of the Vsetínsko region. It was created by converting an unfinished castle. Among the features that remain from the castle are corner rondels with loopholes and the former castle balcony’s supporting brackets—details that reveal the building’s earlier use.

The Evangelical Church in the Lower Church District offers a different historical perspective: it was built in 1782 and 1783 following the Edict of Toleration. The façade of the Občanská záložna building in Vsetín features sgraffito designed by Mikoláš Aleš. The three buildings each highlight a different aspect: the history of conversion, religious history and artistic façade design.

Routes through the city and countryside

For a shorter loop through Vsetín, consider the Městský okruh památkami Vsetína (Vsetín Heritage Circuit): this easy walk is about two kilometres long, suitable for pedestrians and leads to buildings of historical, architectural or cultural interest. The Baťova naučná stezka (Baťa Nature Trail) is considerably longer. At about 16 kilometres, it introduces visitors to the natural and cultural sights of this part of the Vsacko region at twelve stops. Comparing the distances can help you choose, although the routes do not have the same purpose.

The seven-kilometre Naučná stezka okolím Vsetína (Vsetín Surroundings Nature Trail) is described as moderately difficult and has 13 stops. It starts on the banks of the Bečva in Vsetín and passes through the Vršky-Díly Natural Monument. The route is suitable for pedestrians and mountain bikers. From the thirteenth and final stop, bus routes 1 and 5 run from the stop back to the centre; check the timetable before setting out.

Vršky-Díly includes a uniquely terraced slope. Numerous Central European orchids bloom there, particularly in May and June; the flowering period may vary. If you are looking for a cycling route rather than a nature trail, the Cyklostezka Jasenice is a three-kilometre, level cycle path. It starts at the Vsetín Kaufland car park and is also suitable for small children.

Parks and observatory

The Naučná stezka Přírodou vsetínských parků (Nature Trail Through Vsetín’s Parks) has eleven stops. Information boards cover the parks’ natural and aesthetic values. Together with the castle park, it offers another way to explore nature, without having to choose a long route such as the Baťova naučná stezka.

The city also offers views of the sky: Vsetín Observatory holds regular daytime and nighttime sky observations, as well as themed talks and discussion sessions. As programmes can change, it is a good idea to check the latest dates before your visit.
