Fornebu – Art, Coast and Nature
Accommodation in Fornebu
Fornebu brings together contemporary art, cultural history, the coast and nature. If you are looking for a hotel in Fornebu, you can start by choosing the themes you would like to shape your stay: art and museums, Storøyodden beach, or paths through nature. Local attractions range from modern architecture and cultural offerings to a nature reserve and seasonal cross-country ski trails.
Art, Culture and History in Fornebu
Modern architecture and art define Fornebu in its parks, between buildings, and on the Telenor and Equinor buildings. One specific work is “Imprints” by Magne Furuholmen, installed outside the Aker building. Public art and contemporary exhibitions offer a variety of perspectives.
Bærum Kunsthall, an exhibition venue for Norwegian and international contemporary art, is located on the Flytårnet site. Flytårnet Fornebu is a cultural venue with a varied programme and activities throughout the year. K-FO holds art-related courses, professional evenings, workshops and lectures there for members and anyone interested. Individual events may vary; if you are planning to attend a specific event, check the latest information.
The Fornebuhistorisk museum presents Fornebu’s development through chronologically arranged images and posters. The sequence of topics ranges from the airport’s construction to its closure. The Fornebu Bilmuseum is also located on the Flytårnet site. Fornebu is also home to a scooter museum, housed together with Kultur på Hjul. Together, these institutions offer different points of interest: the history of the area, vehicles and contemporary art each represent distinct themes.
Enjoy the Beach and Nature
Storøyodden beach is located at the far end of Storøya on Fornebu and has been awarded the Blue Flag. As the certification needs to be renewed, check before your visit whether it is still valid. The beach is most easily reached by bicycle; travelling by bus followed by a short walk is also possible. The nearest stop is Fornebu vest. Bus services and stop arrangements may change, so it is worth checking the latest information before travelling.
In the wider destination of Bærum, Storøykilen on Fornebu is one of the most species-rich natural areas. This wetland is one of the last remaining in the inner Oslofjord. Rare birds live there, and during migration the area serves as a resting place for many bird species. A path runs through the nature reserve and remains open to walkers. As conditions on site may change, it is a good idea to check them before setting out.
Paths and Seasonal Activities
The Kyststien Forneburunden runs from Lysaker station around Fornebu-landet and back to Lysaker. On the smaller paths along the route, walkers can see seaplanes moored at the jetties; which aircraft are there may vary. The route therefore combines a coastal walk with a special view of the aircraft by the water, without requiring a set amount of time.
The season also affects the activities available: in snowy winters, cross-country ski trails are prepared in Nansenparken, depending on snow conditions. The beach, paths and seasonal activities offer different options for planning your visit. Those particularly interested in art can also visit Henie Onstad Kunstsenter in the wider destination of Bærum, an important institution for international contemporary art. Its location at Høvikodden is surrounded by a large sculpture park.
