Fetsund lies at the mouth of the Glomma on Øyeren. Øyeren is described as Scandinavia’s largest inland delta; north of the lake, Fetsund forms the first natural crossing of the Glomma. To decide whether the town suits your stay, different points of interest offer guidance: timber floating and cultural heritage on the one hand, wetlands and nature on the other.

Getting here and finding your way

Fetsund railway station is on the Kongsvinger Line. Trains run from there to Oslo S, Årnes and Kongsvinger. Check the current timetable for your travel date if you plan to arrive by train. The Fetsund bridges carry rail and road traffic across the Glomma; the road bridge is part of National Road 22. Train destinations and the road connection thus offer different points of reference for planning your journey.

Timber floating and cultural heritage

Fetsund Lenser is a national heritage site, a timber-floating museum and a wetland centre. The world’s only fully preserved timber-sorting facility of its kind is located here. Of the extensive site, 2.5 kilometres are protected; this includes 20 buildings on land. It was in operation from 1861 to 1985. Visitors can see and walk through the protected area, with its cultural heritage sites on land and in the water.

The museum, established at Fetsund Lenser in 1989, presents the history of timber floating in Norway. This combination of preserved industrial heritage and a museum makes the site a concrete destination for anyone interested in the river’s historic use.

Nature at Nordre Øyeren

The Nordre Øyeren Wetland Centre is located at Fetsund Lenser and provides information about the natural values of the Nordre Øyeren Nature Reserve. Its facilities include child-friendly exhibitions, a reading corner, a drawing corner and a nature trail. The centre also offers guided tours in the nature reserves. Check the current dates if you plan to join a tour.

Another nature spot near Fetsund is Heiavannet. It has a sandy beach, large grassy areas, a swimming jetty, fire pits and toilets. Heiavannet is accessible from the Fetsund area by car, bus and bicycle. As facilities may change, check their condition before your visit.

Husmannsplassen Skauen at Hvaltjern in Fetsund is a popular local recreation area. Together with the offerings at the wetland centre and Heiavannet, it shows that visitors can experience the area’s natural attractions in different ways.

Historic sites and routes

Fetsund also offers historic destinations beyond timber floating. Fetsund batteri, also known as Vilbergskansen, is a protected artillery installation dating from 1898 to 1900. Ridderhaugen is an Iron Age burial mound and is considered Norway’s third-largest burial mound. Fet Church in Fetsund is a single-nave, long church in the Neo-Gothic style. It was built in 1890 and has an altarpiece from the 17th century.

The cultural heritage route to Nordre Øyeren runs from Fet Church via Jahrenveien to the car park at the storehouse on Søndre Bjanes. Various paths lead into the reserve from there. If you choose this route, check the trail conditions beforehand, as they may change.
