Nannestad: Ravines, Ski Trails and Aviation History
Accommodation in Nannestad
Ravine landscapes, groomed ski trails, swimming spots and aviation history give Nannestad its distinctive character. The natural scenery includes open grazing slopes and mixed forest, while there are also specific suggestions for outdoor activities, swimming and culture. Whether you want to explore the outdoors or are interested in aviation, these different highlights can shape your travel plans.
Ravine Landscapes and Cultural Heritage Sites
Øya-Nordre Eik is Northern Europe’s largest continuous ravine area. Its landscape is shaped by open, terraced grazing slopes surrounded by lush mixed forest. Old paths and other cultural heritage sites are also part of Øya and Nordre Eik. The natural setting and traces of cultural history are distinct aspects of the area.
Another point of cultural and historical interest is the Vigstein standing stone, which is included in Nannestad’s cultural heritage plan. If you are interested in the area’s history, the plan offers a specific place name to add to your travel plans.
Ski Trails, Cycling Route and Swimming Spots
There are groomed ski trails at Bekkestua, about one kilometre from the car park. Nannestad also has many kilometres of groomed trails in built-up and undeveloped areas. The opportunity to ski on groomed trails close to home applies to the municipality’s residents.
A cycling route option through Romeriksåsen also offers a clear route to follow: it runs south along Rv 120 to the centre of Nannestad, then via Moreppen, Kneppe and Sand. If you plan to take this route, check road conditions and signage before setting off.
The two swimming spots have different features worth noting. Lima bathing area at the southern end of Lake Hurdalsjøen is shallow and suitable for children. Krokfoss is farther downstream on the Leira in southern Nannestad and is one of the best swimming spots there. This gives you a choice between a shallow swimming area specifically noted as suitable for children and a spot associated with the Leira.
Scandinavian Aviation at the SAS Museum
The SAS Museum provides an overview of Scandinavian aviation from its beginnings in the first half of the 20th century to the present day. Its collection includes models of every type of aircraft that SAS has owned over the years, as well as a large collection of historic SAS uniforms. A flight simulator and a cabin area where visitors can experience a flight add a hands-on element to the exhibits.
If you are planning a museum visit, check the current opening hours in advance.
Cultural Event and Seasonal Winter Sports
In the 2021 season, Limaspillet was one of Nannestad’s major cultural events.
Åslia Ski Centre has a downhill run and a T-bar lift. It operates seasonally. Together with the groomed trails, this offers another perspective on winter sports opportunities, while the ravine landscape, cycling route, swimming spots and aviation museum appeal to other interests.
