Discover Rælingen: Cultural trails and landscapes by Øyeren
Accommodation in Rælingen
Rælingen reveals itself through the varied traces of its landscape and history: cultural trails, ridges and waterways show different sides of the destination. The Nordby Cultural Heritage Trail is a loop from Myrdammen to Nordby School, through the valley and back. Signs along the route provide information about the region’s old industry; near Myrdammen, the remains of a dam can also be seen.
Cultural history along the trails
Along the Byåa Cultural Trail, information boards, viewpoints and benches line the route. The remains of three sawmills and traces of several centuries of sawmill activity can be seen in the area. From Byevegen, the trail descends to Øyeren and passes through two pastures: one with goats and the other with cows. In this way, the route connects traces of industry with glimpses of the cultural landscape.
Huldreheim also tells a story of the past. At Ramstadsjøen in Rælingen municipality, you can see the ruins of a former hunting lodge and an information board about Huldreheim’s history. The 378-metre-high hill Hektnerhøgåsen lies immediately north of Ramstadsjøen.
Trails between Østmarka and Øyeren
Marikollen is the seventh-highest peak in Østmarka. The facility there includes about 3.7 kilometres of cross-country ski trails, 2.5 kilometres of which have an asphalt surface for roller skiing. Both cycling routes and cross-country ski trails lead into Østmarka from Nordby School. The availability of these routes depends on the season. There is a bus stop directly outside the car park at Nordby School; if travelling by bus, please check the current services.
Myrdammen lies on the eastern edge of Østmarka, on the western side of Øyeren and 500 metres from the main road at Nordby. Forest, lake and road are therefore important landmarks in this part of Rælingen.
The Rælingsrunden follows Route 120 along the Nitelva and Øyeren, then returns via Øvre Rælingsveg. Its cultural landscapes vary: the route runs partly along the edge of Østmarka and also passes through built-up areas of the municipality. A detour from the Rælingsrunden along Kirkevegen leads to Rælingen Church and the Bygdetun, with a lovely view over the Nordre Øyeren Nature Reserve. The route, trail facilities and views may vary depending on the route; check the latest information about the relevant trail before setting out.
