Åmli: Culture, Cycling and Trails on Trogfjell
Accommodation in Åmli
Åmli offers several ways to enjoy a stay: local history, trails on Trogfjell and a cycling route that starts and ends in Åmli sentrum. If you want to focus your trip on culture, hiking or cycling, you’ll find a range of destinations and route options here.
Local history at the museum and Bygdetun
Elvarheim Museum is in the centre of Åmli, by the old stone bridge, on the way to Trogfjell and near a swimming spot. Its collection includes stuffed animals, trapping equipment and more than 200 knives from the collection of hunter Aslak Harstveit. The “Mangfald og Mote” exhibition features traditional costumes from Åmli dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. They form the basis of today’s Åmlibunad.
Another exhibition, “Det vesle folket”, explores the life of the beaver above and below the water. It includes a film, stuffed beavers, a beaver lodge and display cases for children to explore. The exhibitions may change, so check what is currently on display before visiting. Åmli Bygdetun preserves and shares the history of the former smallholding Grånheia in Åmli sentrum.
Åmli Station also tells the story of the area. From 1910 until the line was extended to Treungen, it was the terminus of the Arendal–Åmli line. Harald Kaas designed the station building in the Swiss style, and Prime Minister Wollert Konow opened it. The building is now used as a library. The museum, Bygdetun and station each have a different focus: collections and exhibitions sit alongside the history of a farm and the former railway line.
Via ferrata, cultural trail and Trogbu
There are two via ferrata routes on Trogfjell. They are signposted from the car park at Elvarheim Museum and along the trail to Trogfjell. From there, an easy walking path takes about 15 minutes to reach the starting points. The second route is listed as having 380 steps and a length of 350 metres; it dates from 2020 and climbs about 200 metres in elevation from the foot of Trogfjell to the summit.
Those interested in nature and culture in Åmli can also follow a hiking and cultural trail with 13 stops, from Elvarheim Museum to the summit of Trogfjell. The Trogfjellstien trail to the day-trip cabin Trogbu also starts at the museum, where parking is available. As parking arrangements may change, check before setting off. Trogbu is on Trogfjell, close to Åmli sentrum. From the cabin, there are good views of the centre, the Nidelva river and a cultural landscape shaped by active farming and forestry.
Cycling route and loop around Åmli
The 35-kilometre Åmli–Treungen cycling route starts and ends in Åmli sentrum. You can ride the full route, travel one way or cover it in sections. The cycling route is also a cultural monument: it passes old stations, bridges and stone bridges, as well as areas of natural interest. The different options give you flexibility in how much of the route to cover, without having to plan the entire journey.
For a loop through and around the centre, there is Sentrumsløypa. The circular route is 1.8 kilometres long and takes about an hour to walk. Most of the route is suitable for wheelchair users. This makes it very different from the longer cycling route: this loop focuses on the centre, while the Åmli–Treungen route can also be ridden one way or in sections.
Just outside Sentrumsløypa is Åmli aktivitets- og badepark. Its facilities include parking, a toilet, a barbecue area and a beach volleyball court; the park is considered especially child-friendly. Individual facilities may change, so it’s a good idea to check before making specific plans.
