Bykle: Cultural History and Trails
Accommodation in Bykle
Bykle brings together cultural history and outdoor trails as two distinct focal points. Bykle Church, Lislestog, and Huldreheimen represent different aspects of the cultural heritage; Jarebu and the Byklestigen add hiking and trail themes to the picture. Seasonal opening hours and the annual Bykledagen are important points of reference when choosing your travel dates.
Cultural History: The Church, Lislestog, and Huldreheimen
Bykle Church dates from around 1620, is decorated with traditional rosemaling, and has a floor area of less than 70 square meters. Its small size gives a tangible sense of scale, while the rosemaling defines its decoration. For travelers interested in historic architecture, this combination of age, size, and decor is a specific cultural-history highlight.
Lislestog is a collection of wooden buildings and old objects. It includes two storehouses, a post house, two saunas, a smithy, a mill house, a milk house, and a mountain dairy hut. The combination of buildings and objects offers a different perspective from viewing a single structure: the focus is on different types of buildings and collected objects.
Huldreheimen is a particularly good example of a museum associated with a national-romantic, bourgeois understanding of culture. The term describes a bourgeois-influenced, national-romantic perspective on culture, placing Huldreheimen in its cultural-historical context.
Walks and Hiking Destinations
Huldreheimen offers a walk among old buildings, with sweeping views across the entire church settlement of Bykle. Jarebu is a day-hiking cabin on Jarekollen, near the center of Bykle, and has three different access routes. From Jarebu, you can look out over the wild reindeer realm of Setesdal, Setesdal Austhei, and Setesdal Vesthei. The two viewpoints direct your gaze to different scales: at Huldreheimen, it is the church settlement; from Jarebu, it is the three areas named above.
The Byklestigen is located close to Bykle: a restored historic trail with information boards. It is about one kilometer long and lies four to five kilometers south of the town center. Compared with Jarebu, the Byklestigen is a short trail, with its historic information boards as the main focus. The destinations therefore differ in both format and subject: a day-hiking cabin and views on the one hand, and a short historic trail on the other.
Seasonal Hours and Event Date
Huldreheimen is a self-service museum. Its seasonal opening period is from June 23 to August 9. Bykle Church has seasonal opening hours from June 23 to August 16, daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Check both schedules before your trip. The church’s opening period therefore extends seven days further into August than Huldreheimen’s.
Bykledagen follows a different schedule: it takes place every year on the first Saturday in September. Specific program details vary by season. If you would like to plan your stay around the event, check the information for the relevant date. This will help you distinguish the summer opening hours of the cultural sites from the annual event in September.
