Mining history and museum
The FlĂĄt nickel mine operated from 1872 to 1946 and played an important role in the local community of Evje. On a walk through the FlĂĄt mine area, visitors can scan QR codes to access information about each location. This connects the history with the stops along the walk, rather than presenting it only as a chronological overview.
Gruveblikk also combines mining history with time spent outdoors: this hiking destination features trails through forest and old mining areas. From there, you can enjoy views of the Otra and parts of Evje. Those interested in the industrial past will find, alongside the information at the FlĂĄt mine area, a hiking destination that brings together old mining sites and the surrounding landscape.
The Evjemoen Forsvarsmuseum offers a different historical perspective. It presents military history from 1912 to 2001. One exhibition also focuses on the life and work of politician and prime minister Jørgen Løvland. These two subjects give the museum visit a clear historical and biographical framework.
Hiking trails, views and a beach
The route to Abusdalsknuten passes through marshland and forest. At the summit stands a four-metre-high tower with views in every direction. This makes it different from Gruveblikk: there, trails pass through forest and old mining areas, while the marshland and forest along the route and the observation tower define the character of Abusdalsknuten.
Another way to enjoy the landscape is Tangen Beach. The beach is 700 metres long, family-friendly and equipped with a floating jetty. These features make it a clear contrast to the hiking destinations: instead of a trail through forest, mining areas or marshland, the focus here is a beach with a jetty. This lets you plan your day around the type of outing you want, without treating the different destinations as interchangeable.
Active experiences and getting your bearings
At Evje Klatrepark, climbing courses wind through the trees. The park offers challenging obstacles and ziplines through the treetops. It uses a continuous modern belay system; while taking part, visitors are secured to a cable with a safety harness. Both the courses and the safety system are among the specific features of this experience.
Near Evje, TrollAktiv offers a rafting trip on the Otra. Before paddling through rapids, participants receive a safety briefing. The climbing park and rafting are two different active options: one features courses through the treetops, while the other takes you down the river by boat and through rapids.
National Cycle Route 3 also offers a different perspective on the area. It passes through Evje og Hornnes and partly follows the route of the former Setesdal railway. This historic alignment can serve as an additional reference point when planning your trip.
