Lillesand combines maritime history with city walks and nature experiences. Its themes range from sailing ships and historic buildings to short hikes, viewpoints and family activities. You can choose what to focus on during your stay in Lillesand: the city’s history, trails in nature, or both.

Sailing ships and city history

This year’s exhibitions at Lillesand Museum explore the great importance of the sailing ship era for the region. They also cover working life in Lillesand at the time: a large proportion of the population worked in shipbuilding or seafaring. Other topics include shipowners, shipbuilding, life at sea, hazards at sea, pilotage and the role of women. The exhibitions offer perspectives ranging from occupations and risks at sea to the people who shaped life on land.

At Tollboden, Tollmuseet presents a photo exhibition about sailing ships from Lillesand, as well as changing art exhibitions. The history of the harbour also illustrates the importance of shipbuilding: from 1860 to 1900, there were as many as eight shipyards there, where fifty large wooden sailing ships were built. At Verven stands the only surviving building associated with Lillesand’s sailing ship industry, which flourished towards the end of the 19th century.

Historic houses and lanes

Carl Knudsen-gaarden is an Empire-style building dating from 1827, with furnishings from the 19th century. A city walk also takes you past historic white-painted houses and charming lanes. The maritime history and older buildings offer different perspectives on Lillesand: the development of shipbuilding on the one hand, and the historic townscape on the other.

Nature trails and viewpoints in Lillesand

Springvannsstemmen is located in the centre of Lillesand and is ideal for a short circular walk. Tadpoles and salamanders spawn in and around the water; there is also a salamander hotel where amphibians can overwinter. The Kaldvell area has carefully constructed trails along the Stikselva and Grimevann. Both places combine outdoor exercise with specific nature and landscape features.

Knibenro is a day-trip cabin at the Kniben viewpoint and the first day-trip cabin in Agder. From Fløresteinen, you can enjoy a bird’s-eye view of Lillesand. Alongside trails by the water, you can choose a cabin at a viewpoint or a view across the town as different destinations.

Family activities

At the world of figures in Flørenesskauen, at least 30 elaborately crafted figures are hidden among the trees. S.N. Hansens park has a playground with an oversized blue chair, its own sandy beach and good opportunities for catching crabs; the park is well suited to family outings. Children can take part in a sandcastle competition at Lillesand’s centrally located town beach. These activities offer different experiences: figures in the forest, play in the park or an activity on the beach.

In the wider Lillesand destination

The wider Lillesand destination also includes places and routes outside the town. Blindleia is one of Norway’s most beautiful boating routes and runs from Lillesand to Gamle Hellesund and Ulvøysund. This inner coastal route is 20 kilometres long and runs from Lillesand towards Kristiansand. You can explore it by excursion boat, charter boat or private boat. In summer, M/S Øya follows a regular route through Blindleia between Lillesand and Kristiansand. Check the current operating days before your trip.

For routes on land, the Vestlandske Hovedvei is a hiking and cycling trail between Lillesand and Grimstad. On Justøya in Lillesand, Saltviga is a public coastal park with a sandy beach, rocks and coastal scenery. When planning, you can consider the differences between a route on the water, a trail for hiking and cycling, and a coastal park.

Bronseplassen is in Høvåg, in the municipality of Lillesand, and is Norway’s oldest reconstructed Bronze Age farm. Well-marked nature trails lead to a viewpoint overlooking the Skagerrak. Saltholmen fyrstasjon in the municipality of Lillesand is also part of the wider destination: this listed visitor lighthouse was established in 1882 and decommissioned and unmanned in 1952; a light mounted on a stand replaced the lighthouse. Check current visitor access before your visit.
