Risør combines a historic centre with trails through the coastal landscape and a varied cultural scene. The white-painted wooden houses and narrow streets define the old town. Risørflekken, a sea mark dating from the age of sailing ships, offers impressive views over the town and sea. During your stay, you can take in both the townscape and its connection to the coast.

Trails, views and swimming spots

Urheia lies above the centre and has walking and hiking trails, viewpoints and swimming spots. Toilets and parking are also part of the visitor facilities there; their condition may change. The cultural trail in Urheia passes an old coastal fort from the Second World War. If you would like to combine a walk with a glimpse into the history of the coast, you can find both in this area.

Randviktangen is also a good option for an outdoor excursion: this area in Risør is a nature reserve with trails. As trail conditions can change, it is a good idea to check them before your visit. Randvikstranda is another option for a day by the sea. The water is shallow there, making the beach suitable for a family day out. Conditions may vary by season.

Small islands form an archipelago around Risør. Its public access also has a historical basis: in the 1930s, islets and skerries were donated to the municipality on the condition that their benefits would remain accessible to the public. If you would like to explore the coastal landscape from the water, Stangholmen is a recreation area made up of two islets. Stangholmen has a lighthouse station; the much smaller Vestre Stangholmen is undeveloped. From June to August, the boat “Agnes” runs as a shuttle from the centre to Stangholmen. Check the current timetable before travelling.

Culture, crafts and music

The Villvin Arts and Crafts Market has been held annually in Risør since 1979. More than 100 exhibitors from the Nordic countries come together for the event. The market includes demonstrations and workshops, including creative workshops for children. As the programme and dates vary from year to year, it is worth taking the relevant edition into account when planning your trip.

Music and traditional boats are also part of the events calendar. The Risør Chamber Music Festival was founded in 1991; venues include Risør Church, Hollenderhagen and Stangholmen, as well as other places in the centre. Dates and venues may vary from year to year. The Risør Wooden Boat Festival has been held since 1984; its dates and programme also vary from one edition to another. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these festivals, check the relevant event details.

For a visit outside the dates of a particular festival, Risør Kunstpark offers exhibitions, workshops and creative experiences in the centre all year round. The exhibition programme and opening hours may change. Risør Kystkultursenter in Moen focuses on the municipality’s boatbuilding and shipbuilding history, preserving and sharing this cultural heritage.

Aquarium and coastal culture

Risør Aquarium is the only saltwater aquarium in southern Norway. Activities on offer include digital drawing, crab fishing and feeding the fish; some activities may be seasonal. For directions, take bus number 5 to the centre of Risør, then walk along the harbour for about ten minutes. Check current bus information before travelling.

At Kystkultursenter, visitors can try wood carving, have a go in a boat they have built themselves and fish for crabs from the quay. These hands-on activities are seasonal; check the current programme before your visit. Together with the aquarium, the centre offers two different ways to experience life on the coast: one introduces you to marine life, while the other explores boatbuilding and shipbuilding traditions.
