Filtvet brings together a coastal path and a distinctive history of architecture and lighthouses. If you are looking for hotels for a stay in Filtvet, these themes can help you decide what to focus on during your trip: walking along the coastal path or taking a closer look at the local history of the church and seafaring.

Coastal path and seasonal travel

The Kyststien Filtvet til Holmsbu starts at Filtvet pier. From this starting point, hikes head south along the coastal path towards Tofte. Trail conditions can vary; check them before setting out. In summer, Filtvet pier is also served by a scheduled boat. As this service is seasonal, check the current timetable before travelling. These are two separate details to bear in mind when planning: the route description indicates the direction of the hike, while the timetable concerns the summer boat connection.

Trefoldighet Feriekoloni is located in Filtvet on Hurumlandet and is Norway’s oldest active holiday colony. It is a facility for youth holidays with restricted access, not a visitor attraction open to the public.

Filtvet Church: wooden construction and local history

Filtvet Church is a long church built of exposed timber using the log construction method. The ends of the inner roof beams in the nave are shaped like gaping dragon heads. This detail draws attention to the distinctive design of the roof structure inside the church. The church has protected status, listed after 1850. It was built on “Torsløkka”, the potato field of Filtvet farm. Its construction, roof design and location each tell a different part of its local history.

Lighthouse and fjord setting

Filtvet Lighthouse stands where the Oslofjord begins to narrow towards Drøbaksundet. The first lantern at Filtvet Lighthouse Station was lit in 1840; the new Filtvet lighthouse was completed in 1877. The dates refer to two distinct stages in the lighthouse’s history. Filtvet still has a functioning beacon in the form of a concrete column on the shore. The fjord location, the lighthouse’s historical development and the continuing beacon are thus distinct aspects of the site.

More to explore in the wider Asker destination

The section of the Pilgrims’ Path in Asker is part of the Tunsbergleden, which runs from Larvik to Bærum. The Semsvannet recreation area offers cycling routes around the lake. The Konglungen coastal path is another hiking option: it runs between Løkenes farm and the beach through a protected woodland area with pleasant walking trails. In Asker, the coastal path also passes directly by the Oslofjord Museum; there are sandy beaches in Vollen and at Sjøstrand.

The wider Asker destination also offers more for those interested in cultural history. Sem Saw Mill began operating in 1612 and is a living example of industrial heritage owned by the Asker Museum. The museum also includes the artists’ homes of Tilla and Otto Valstad, and Hulda and Arne Garborg. The Oslofjord Museum explores historic recreational boats, marine pollution and the construction of the polar ship Maud. These subjects give a stay in Asker its own cultural and scenic context.
