Åros is in the municipality of Asker, at the mouth of the Åroselva. There are several distinct themes to consider when planning your trip: fishing in the river, hiking by the sea, a beach visit and the town’s building history. If you’re looking for a hotel in Åros, these interests can help you decide what to focus on during your stay.

River and trails

The Åroselva offers opportunities for trout and salmon fishing. Røyken & Åros JFF organises fishing there together with Åros elveierlag. Check the local regulations before planning this activity. The river also has a history of earlier use: in the 17th century, it was known for freshwater pearl mussel fishing. The historic pearl fishing and opportunities for trout and salmon fishing are thus distinct themes associated with the same river.

Årosmarka has an extensive network of trails, hiking opportunities and fishing waters. This offers a wider range of options for visitors who want to include both hiking and fishing in their travel plans.

Coast and beach

The Kyststien offers hiking opportunities along the sea. From Åros, the trail crosses Hurumveien and then follows Ivers vei for about 3 km. This largely follows the old route between Åros and Sætre. The distance of about 3 km refers to the section on Ivers vei, not to the entire Kyststien.

Vervenstranda in Åros offers opportunities for swimming and relaxation. The three ways to enjoy the water are distinct: the Åroselva is for fishing and historic river use, the Kyststien for hiking by the sea, and Vervenstranda for swimming and relaxation. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you’d rather spend your time by the river, hiking the coast or at the beach.

Building history and industry

Åros kirke is a wooden long church designed by Alfred Christian Dahl and built in 1903 from timber on granite walls. It was consecrated on 28 July 1903.

At Åros store stands a protected stone building dating from 1696. Røyken Klædesfabrik was founded in 1898 at a waterfall on the Åroselva. The timeline thus spans the protected stone building, the founding of the factory and the early 20th-century church. This places building history and the establishment of a business side by side in the town’s history. The factory’s founding and the church’s consecration took place exactly five years apart.
