Røyken: Church Art and Local History
Accommodation in Røyken
There are several ways to shape a stay in Røyken: medieval church art, local history, and activities involving swimming and climbing. Røyken Church and Kornmagasinet provide a historical setting for a visit to the area, while Røykenbadet adds a sporting perspective. If you’re looking for a hotel, you could first consider which of these themes best suits the purpose of your trip.
Røyken Church: Architecture and Furnishings
Røyken Church is a medieval stone long church built from local red granite. It is one of the oldest churches in the Asker deanery. Its design, materials, and age each offer clues to the building’s history: the long church dates from the Middle Ages and was built from red granite.
The surviving interior furnishings also span several historical periods. Medieval elements include a 13th-century soapstone baptismal font and wall paintings. Two medieval consecration crosses are located on the north and south walls of the choir. A richly carved Baroque altarpiece decorated with acanthus leaf scrolls, dating from the late 17th century, adds a different historical note. The furnishings therefore include works from both the medieval and Baroque periods.
Visitor Information and Local History
Outside the chapel at Røyken Church, a pilgrim stamp is attached to a post next to the parking lot. There are water taps in the cemetery; check on site whether you can rely on them for your plans. A public toilet at the church is open during normal working hours when cemetery staff are present. Check this condition before setting out.
A local history museum is located on the second floor of Kornmagasinet. The building also houses an extensive collection of old objects from the local area. Kornmagasinet is therefore home both to a local history museum and to a collection of regional everyday and material culture. If you’re planning a museum visit, check access in advance.
The Oldtidsmarsjen, a hiking event between the fjords, follows a historic route. The event was held for the 32nd time in 2022. Its route followed Oldtidsveien from Gullaug in Lier to Slemmestad, with Røyken Church serving as one of the possible starting points. This information refers to the 2022 edition.
Activities and Getting There
Røykenbadet offers a different focus from the church and local history. The swimming complex has five different pools and a 60-meter water slide. It also has a 13-meter climbing wall and a dedicated bouldering area. Swimming, water sliding, climbing, and bouldering are distinct activities that may appeal to different interests when planning a visit.
Røyken Station is on the Spikkestad Line. Trains run from there toward Oslo, Lillestrøm, and Spikkestad. The station opened in 1872—a historical detail that adds another perspective to the travel information. Check the timetable for your travel dates so you can include these connections in your plans.
Consider whether church art and local history or the activities at Røykenbadet will be the main focus of your stay. Then compare options based on your specific requirements, without inferring anything about individual hotels from the local attractions.
