Skarsvåg: Harbor, Fishing Culture and Kirkeporten
Accommodation in Skarsvåg
Skarsvåg is known as the northernmost fishing village in the world. Depending on whether you want to explore the village, experience the annual market day, or set aside time for a scenic walk, your stay can take different forms.
Harbor and village scenery
At the quay, you can take a walk, look at fishing nets and buoys, and photograph boats in the harbor. These impressions give the coastal village a tangible connection to fishing and differ from the natural scenery along the Kirkeporten trail. Skarsvåg Church is also a specific example of local architectural history: it is a wooden long church built in 1961, with 60 seats. The church is right by the road leading down to Skarsvåg from the E69.
Market day at Daniels Hus
A market day has been held at Daniels Hus every year since 2021, marking the end of the summer season. Visitors can buy homemade boknafisk, fish patties, reindeer patties, cakes, and freshly baked bread there; coffee and cakes are also served. These offerings are part of the market day and should not be considered a daily food service. If you want to visit the market, check the date of that year's market day before your trip.
Hiking and seasonal sights at Kirkeporten
Kirkeporten is a striking natural rock formation just outside Skarsvåg. The opening in the rock formation offers a spectacular view of the North Cape Horn on the opposite side of the bay. A hiking trail leads there from Skarsvåg; the round trip takes approximately two hours.
The trail is easy to moderate and well marked in summer. It is also accessible in winter, but snow and ice make suitable footwear and caution essential. Conditions can change. Seasonal light phenomena also vary: the area around Kirkeporten has the midnight sun in summer and the Northern Lights in winter. When planning, keep in mind both the approximate hiking time and the season and trail conditions.
Fishing camp and getting there
Cape Marina is a full-service fishing camp in Skarsvåg. Its offerings include deep-sea fishing for halibut and cod; availability may depend on guest arrangements. Guests at Cape Marina can also use an Arctic sauna with a sea view and go ice swimming in the Barents Sea in both winter and summer. If these offerings are important to your choice, ask in advance about the specific arrangements for guests.
A reservation is required to travel by public bus: the service to Skarsvåg runs on request and must be booked at least four hours in advance. Check the booking details before your trip so you can factor in the required lead time when planning.
