Blikberget – Cultural Landscape, Nature and Courses
Accommodation in Blikberget
Blikberget is located in the far south of Åmot municipality, in Julussdlaen. Several meadows and hayfields characterize the area. For planning your trip, three aspects are particularly relevant: the cultural landscape, plant life and courses scheduled for specific dates.
Local History and Cultural Landscape
The first settlers arrived in Blikkberget around 1756. The cultural heritage plan of Åmot municipality designates Blikkberget as a cultural landscape. The Lithica Gathering also took place in 2024 at Blikberget in Norway. Alongside the landscape, both early settlement and a clearly dated event contribute to the area's cultural history.
Meadows and Plant Life
There is a hay meadow with Solblom at Solvang and Svea. A 2011 nature survey describes the meadow as intact and unfertilized. Other notable species at the site include Bakkesøte and Burdespore. Because of its unfertilized hay meadows with rare and Red-Listed species, the survey classifies the landscape as regionally valuable; the site is assigned grade B.
The plants and cultural landscape here are specifically identified: the information covers everything from the hay meadow at Solvang and Svea to the species that are notable at the site. If these nature-related features are important to your stay, note that the description of the meadow's condition dates from 2011, and ask locally about its current condition.
Courses by Living Wild
For 2026, Living Wild had planned a Spring Skills course on Stone Age techniques, a Winter Basic Skills intensive course and a Hide Tanning intensive course in Blikberget. The Spring Skills course included making fire kits, stone knives, bone needles, cords, fire bowls and carved everyday items. The winter course covered, among other things, tracking and making fire by friction. The Hide Tanning intensive course focused on a broad range of tanning techniques.
The courses differ mainly in their practical focus: Stone Age crafting techniques, basic winter skills or tanning. Registration by email was planned. As course schedules can change, check current dates and how to register before including a course in your travel plans.
More to Explore in the Wider Åmot Destination
In the wider Åmot destination, Glommastien circles Rena and runs for about three kilometres along the Glomma. There are several places to swim and stop for a rest along the trail; Åmot municipality maintains it year-round. Glommastien therefore offers a different focus from the meadows and courses in Blikberget: here, the river and places to pause take centre stage.
For winter sports in Åmot, a comparison of two ski centres offers some concrete points of reference. Rena alpin og skisenter has two lifts and six runs; the longest is 1,700 metres. Furutangen skisenter has two lifts and five runs, as well as a large terrain park, snowmaking on all runs and floodlighting on several runs. Operating details can vary by season; check them before your visit.
The wider Åmot destination also has cultural history to explore. In Rena stands Åmot kirke, designed by Henrik Bull and inaugurated in 1902. Built from solid timber in the Art Nouveau style, it is also known as Tømmerkatedralen. Peter Kasterud of Fåberg carved the altar and pulpit; the pulpit dates from 1775. These architectural and craft details add a distinct cultural note to Åmot.
