Åsnes combines attractive cultural landscapes with extensive woodland; the Glomma divides the area down the middle. River, forest and open terrain provide a setting for a trip that can bring culture and time outdoors together. Hiking trails, waterways and specific recreation facilities offer a range of options.

Hiking Trails, Finnskogleden and Topptur

Åsnes has around 259 kilometres of hiking trails in forest and open terrain. The total length may change as trails are added or removed. The marked Finnskogleden is 240 kilometres long and runs north from Morokulien in Eidskog, through Åsnes, to Søre Osen in the municipality of Trysil. It follows old transport routes, offers nature experiences and provides insight into traditional Finnish culture. Check trail conditions before setting out.

There are twelve marked Topptur routes; the number may change in future seasons. Anyone can take part, regardless of age or physical fitness. Check the current seasonal information before your visit. In addition, twelve Topptur boxes are available in Åsnes from 1 May to 30 September; these seasonal dates may also be adjusted.

Culture in Åsnes Finnskog

Åsnes Finnskog Church is a wooden long church dating from 1861. A memorial stone stands next to the church entrance. Its inscription states that Carl Axel Gottlund, the apostle of Finnskogen, designated the site for a church in 1821. In Åsnes Finnskog, the former Faldåsen school is now a museum. The cultural story is told through the church’s architecture, the site designation recorded on the stone and the former school’s present-day use as a museum.

Recreation, Lakes and Rivers

Myrmoen, near the centre of Flisa, is a state-protected recreation area. It has an extensive network of trails, a cycling track and a disc golf course. One trail is suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs; in winter, a cross-country ski trail is illuminated. Individual facilities may change.

Rogsjøen is a good lake for perch fishing. The lake has an accessible bathing beach, a fishing jetty, a barbecue shelter, a shelter and a toilet; these facilities may change. Along the Flisaelva, the riverside promenade offers opportunities for swimming, fishing and relaxation. Outdoor exercise equipment is also available there for public use. The Kynnavassdraget river system, together with the Flisaelva, is well suited to canoeing.

Plan Your Cycling and Travel

Dulpetorpetrunden is a 36-kilometre cycling route in Åsnes. Check local conditions before setting out. For public transport, one useful option is the route along National Road 2 on the east side of the Glomma: a bus runs once an hour between Elverum and Kongsvinger. Overall, public transport in Åsnes is limited; check current departures before travelling.

Trip Plans and Hotel Location

If you’re looking for a hotel in Åsnes, first decide which experiences you want to shape your trip: hiking in the forest or along Finnskogleden, Finnskog culture, activities near Flisa or time by the waterways. This will help you choose a location that suits your own travel plans.
