Kongsvinger Fortress is a defining destination if you want to get to know Kongsvinger through its views and history: from the fortress, you can look out over the town and the Glomma River. It is also a protected national cultural heritage site. Art, concerts and historical interpretation use the fortress as a venue; individual programmes vary. If you want to attend a particular event, check the relevant dates in advance.

The Fortress and the Town’s History

Several museums present the history of Kongsvinger Fortress. The Kongsvinger Museum is a town and regional museum with two sites in Øvrebyen and another site a few kilometres outside the town centre. This gives you the opportunity to discover the town’s history at more than one museum location.

The museum offers historical walking tours of Øvrebyen, focusing on the period from 1855 to 1905. They start at Kongsvinger Fortress and end at the Women’s Museum (Kvinnemuseet). As arrangements for the start of the tour may vary, check the latest tour information before your visit.

Another historic building is AamodtgĂ„rden, at the foot of the fortress. Built in 1801, the wooden building is designed in the Empire style. The home of Harald and Nina Aamodt has been preserved inside, and the Kongsvinger Art Association is also based there. The building, the preserved home and the art association’s current use of the premises offer different ways to explore the area’s cultural history during your stay.

Finnskogrunden and the Landscape

The Finnskogrunden trail runs around Lake Mþkeren in Kongsvinger Municipality. Its route follows well-used and less-travelled paths between Finnish Forest settlements, crofts, schoolhouses and hamlets. Along the way, you will encounter not only a variety of trails but also places that tell the story of the region’s settlement and everyday life.

Austmarka centre is a natural starting and finishing point for the Finnskogrunden trail. However, you can also tackle the route in shorter stages and from different starting points. Finnskogrunden is a historic DNT hiking route. As part of a broader initiative, DNT and the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage are working together to make old roads better known and more widely used. DNT Finnskogen og Omegn has a local group in Kongsvinger/Eidskog.

Swimming Spots by the Lake and River

If you want to spend time by the water, there are several places to choose from, each with different features. LierflĂžyta/Lierdammen has a sandy beach, a volleyball net, benches, outdoor toilets and parking right by the swimming spot. Facilities may change, so check the latest information before your visit.

Lake VingersjÞen is close to the destination and is suitable for swimming; clear water and the surrounding natural landscape define the area. GrÄsand on the Glomma has a sandy beach and calm river water. Conditions there may vary depending on the water level of the Glomma. When choosing between the swimming spots, you can weigh up whether the listed facilities, the lake and its surroundings, or the changing river conditions matter most to you.

Getting There and Choosing the Right Accommodation

The transport terminal at Kongsvinger station, which opened in 2025, makes it easy to transfer between trains and buses and simplifies the use of public transport. Local transport connections may change, so it is worth checking the latest timetables as you plan your trip.

If you are looking for a hotel in Kongsvinger, your planned activities can help you choose: the fortress, museums and historical tours offer a cultural focus, while the Finnskogrunden trail and swimming spots provide different ways to spend your free time.
