Tufsingdalen offers several starting points for planning your trip: the Tufsingdalseskern, shaped by the Ice Age; the Tufsinga and Femunden; and historic traces of winter travel. Activities range from fishing and hiking to groomed cross-country ski trails and dog sledding in winter. Consider whether you would like to focus your stay on scenery, outdoor activities or cultural history.

Landscape and waterways

The Tufsingdalseskern is a 13-kilometre-long ridge of sand and gravel that formed after the last Ice Age. Part of the Tufsingdalseskern lies within a nature reserve of the same name, established in 1989. Further into the region towards Tufsingdalen and Femunden, the soils are poorer and the vegetation is more strongly characterised by heather and lichen species.

The Tufsinga flows through Tufsingdalen and empties into Femunden. There are many fishing opportunities at around 20 small and large lakes, as well as along the Tufsinga and at Femunden. In addition to the lakes, you can therefore choose the river and Femunden as fishing waters.

Hiking, paddling and winter activities

You can paddle along the Tufsinga from Strømmen in Tufsingdalen to Kløvstenbua. Check conditions and access before setting out. Another way to experience the landscape is the Flenskampen hiking route: it leads to Flensjøen, then follows the lake before continuing to the summit. The paddling route ends at Kløvstenbua, while the hiking route ends at the summit; these destinations give the two trips different focuses.

Tufsingdal Idrettslag grooms cross-country ski trails in Tufsingdalen. As grooming status can change, check for current updates before setting out. This lets you plan your ski trip according to the condition of the trails.

Fjestad Husky invites you to a unique day experiencing the hosts’ home and everyday life in Tufsingdalen, where 40 Alaskan huskies live. In winter, Fjestad Husky offers dog-sled rides through forests and mountains, as well as on Femundsisen. If you are planning a ride, check current dates and booking options in advance.

Winter routes and cultural history

The Røros Mining Town and the Circumference World Heritage Site includes the winter transport route between Røros and Tufsingdalen. This route is also part of the winter route between Røros and Falun. These two connections show different scales: the route between Røros and Tufsingdalen, and the wider connection as far as Falun.

Several boathouses along the Tufsinga remain important for fishing. Tufsingdalen Church is a wooden long church, built in 1920 and consecrated for worship on 6 October 1920. In Tufsingdalen, connections to fishing, worship and historic winter travel stand side by side.

Getting around locally

The Tufsingdalen checkpoint is located on FV 28. Signposted parking areas and a paved footpath lead to the community centre and the assembly area. If you are planning to attend an event, check the access information for the relevant edition, as event access arrangements may change.
